Liverpool Waters set for a major boost

The regeneration and transformation of Liverpool’s historic docks is set to receive a major boost, following exciting updates and a refreshed vision for Liverpool Waters. The masterplan has now been updated to incorporate ideas put forward by the local community; reflecting societal change and creating a better place to live, work and visit.

The original masterplan for Peel Waters’ ambitious 30-year Liverpool Waters project was approved eleven years ago; before the growth of home and hybrid working, and before the emerging destination was approved to become the home of Everton Football Club’s new stadium.

Peel Waters, who specialise in waterside regeneration, have now updated the masterplan to shape the future of Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, whilst leaving the scale of the project, and its ambition to transform the entire northern docks, unchanged.

A community engagement exercise, carried out last year, revealed that the people of Liverpool are overwhelmingly positive and excited about the regeneration that is underway at Liverpool Waters. Their feedback has been a vital part of the process in creating the revised masterplan.

Feedback from the public, saw requests for the masterplan to include more public green spaces and further preservation to unique elements of the docks; through the creation of more dockside open space which would also celebrate the site’s unique maritime heritage.

The people of Liverpool also asked for a more diverse and affordable housing offer, and for community and connectivity to be at the heart of the new masterplan, bringing people together and ensuring that the area is easily accessed.

The community also expressed concerns about the impact of climate change. Sustainability is key to the revised Liverpool Waters masterplan with the design minimising the need for cars and including better integration with public transport and delivering enhanced infrastructure to support cycling; all of which form part of a wider strategy to support environmental and economic sustainability.

The feedback received from the public has been a vital part of the process in creating and shaping the revised designs and the Liverpool Waters masterplan has been updated to reflect this.

The revised plan also includes the new Everton Football Stadium, which previously wasn’t included in the earlier masterplan. The new plans are set to include additional new welcoming spaces for visitors, as well as designing the surrounding area to visibly complement the new stadium.

Chris Capes, Development Director for Liverpool Waters, said:

“We are really grateful to everyone who took the time to share their views on the future of our city’s waterfront. This was a very important part of the process in the future development of Liverpool Waters and the feedback we received was incredibly valuable. The people of Liverpool have contributed, and we have acted on it.

“We have created a new masterplan that is very exciting for the city of Liverpool and everyone who lives and works here. We are looking forward to submitting the revised Liverpool Waters Masterplan to Liverpool City Council in mid-June.”

More details of the revised Liverpool Waters Masterplan, including new CGI images, will be released when the plan is submitted to Liverpool City Council in June. To leave your comments, please visit the website here.
