This summer, Liverpool will proudly host the prestigious 2025 British Chess Championships, and with a packed programme of free events, giant chessboards and expert coaching, everyone is encouraged to get involved.
The English Chess Federation’s flagship tournament will take place at St George’s Hall from 31 July to 10 August, with the celebrations extending across the city through a vibrant schedule of community events.
In the lead-up to, and during, the championships, public spaces, parks, libraries and iconic venues will play host to a wide range of activities, perfect for complete beginners and seasoned grandmasters alike. All events are free of charge, though some require advance registration.
With over 20 events planned, highlights include:
ChessFest at Liverpool ONE
Sunday 20 July, 11am–4pm
Enjoy giant outdoor chess, free lessons, and the chance to take on a chess master at Chavasse Park.
Grand Opening Simul at Williamson Square
Friday 1 August, 1pm–5pm — Registration required
Take on Grandmasters including Simon Williams and Danny Gormally in a thrilling simultaneous exhibition match.
Chess Coaching at Central Library
Saturday 2 August, 11am–3pm
Learn from expert coaches and develop your skills in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
Street Fest on Castle Street & Liverpool Town Hall
Sunday 3 August, 11am–5pm — Registration required
Part of a wider festival, this event includes a giant chessboard on Castle Street, along with casual games, coaching sessions and expert talks inside Liverpool Town Hall.
Blitz Challenge at Our Lady and St Nicholas Church
Monday 4 August, 6pm–9pm — Registration required
A fast-paced chess tournament open to players of all levels — ideal for those seeking a competitive challenge.
Pop-Up Challenge at the Walker Art Gallery
Thursday 7 August, 11am–4pm
In the stunning surroundings of the Walker Art Gallery, test your skills against some of the region’s top chess talents, including FIDE Master Jonathan Blackburn.

Organised by Chess in Schools and Communities in partnership with Culture Liverpool, this inclusive, family-friendly programme is designed to make chess accessible, engaging, and fun for all ages and abilities.
This marks just the second time in the tournament’s 121-year history that the British Chess Championships will be held in Liverpool. The event is supported by the English Chess Federation, Chess in Schools and Communities, Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Chess Association, Liverpool BID Company, UKSPF, local chess clubs and their players.
