A John Lennon statue on Penny Lane that has become a familiar sight for Beatles fans visiting Liverpool is set to go under the hammer later this month, with an estimated price of up to £100,000.
The life-size bronze John Lennon Peace Statue, which has stood outside St Barnabas Church on Penny Lane since August 2022, will be included in The Beatles Collection sale at Omega Auctions on Tuesday, 29 September.
The sculpture has been given an estimate of £70,000 to £100,000 ahead of the auction.
Standing almost 6ft tall, the artwork depicts Lennon leaning against a large peace symbol featuring the word ‘Imagine’. The sculpture is cast in bronze with a green patina and sits on a bronze and steel base.
It was created by the late British artist Laura Lian, who designed the piece with the aim of continuing the message of peace associated with Lennon and Yoko Ono.
From Glastonbury to Penny Lane
Before finding its home on one of Liverpool’s most famous streets, the John Lennon Peace Statue travelled to a number of locations.
According to Laura Lian’s official website, the sculpture appeared at Glastonbury Festival, St George’s Hall in Liverpool, the Hard Rock Hotel in London and the ARTZUID exhibition in Amsterdam.
It was eventually installed outside St Barnabas Church on Penny Lane in August 2022 with support from the Penny Lane Development Trust.
The installation was initially intended to remain in place temporarily, but the statue went on to become a regular stop for Beatles fans visiting the area.
Thousands of visitors have since posed alongside the sculpture, helping it become another recognisable part of Liverpool’s internationally famous Beatles story.
Replica will remain on Penny Lane
While the statue itself is being sold, visitors to Penny Lane won’t be saying goodbye to John.
A replica of the sculpture is set to take its place outside St Barnabas Church, meaning the popular photo spot will remain following the auction.
The statue being sold will be deep cleaned and repatinated before being collected by its new owner.
Dan Muscatelli-Hampson, director of operations and consignments at Omega Auctions, described the sculpture as one of Liverpool’s most quickly recognised modern Beatles landmarks.
He said thousands of Beatles fans from around the world had been photographed alongside the statue, adding that the replica will allow Lian’s “vision and message of peace” to continue on Penny Lane.
Part of Liverpool’s Beatles story
Penny Lane remains one of Liverpool’s best-known Beatles locations and attracts visitors from across the world throughout the year.
The area was immortalised in The Beatles’ 1967 song Penny Lane, which was released as a double A-side single with Strawberry Fields Forever.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney also had personal connections to the area during their younger years, with the Penny Lane bus terminus forming part of their journeys around Liverpool.
The statue has added another Beatles attraction to the area since arriving in 2022, joining the street signs, murals and other landmarks regularly visited by fans.
The John Lennon Peace Statue will be offered as Lot 333 in Omega Auctions‘ The Beatles Collection sale on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.
The auction is currently scheduled to begin at 10am and features more than 300 lots of Beatles memorabilia.
