A giant portrait of Southport-born golfer Tommy Fleetwood has been unveiled in Liverpool city centre as the region prepares to welcome the 154th Open Championship.
The 1,000-square-metre artwork has been painted onto the grass at Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE, ahead of the tournament at Royal Birkdale.

Measuring 40 metres by 25 metres, the huge image took a team of three people two days to complete using specialist grass pitch-marking paint.
The portrait was unveiled at lunchtime on Friday, July 10, celebrating one of the Liverpool City Region’s best-known sporting stars as the eyes of the golfing world turn to the region.
Fleetwood, who was born in Southport, will be among the players competing when the world’s oldest golf championship gets under way at Royal Birkdale this weekend.

Brendan Hattam, Centre Director at Liverpool ONE, said:
“As the region welcomes visitors not just from around the UK, but from across the world, we wanted to mark this special occasion with a supersized display of support and we think we’ve got Tommy’s image down to a tee.
“For eight days the eyes of the golfing world will be focussed on neighbouring Royal Birkdale and I know people across the region are both proud and excited to be celebrating The Open’s return.
“There’s going to be a real buzz around the city for what is one of the world’s greatest golf championships and we’re delighted to be playing a small part in the celebrations with our huge display of support.”
The 154th Open takes place at Royal Birkdale from 12-19 July and it will be the eleventh time the links course has hosted the tournament, following its last visit in 2017. Royal Liverpool in Hoylake hosted the 151st Open in 2023.
