SERIES TWO – EDITION TWENTY NINE

In the latest edition of our ‘Faces behind the Business’ series, we caught up with Julie McDermott aged 46, founder of Shadow & Line; contemporary jewellery inspired by architecture, reflections and shadows.

When did you first get into the industry?

After attending some inspiring jewellery classes in early 2019 with Noctua Workshops, I spent all my free time making jewellery for myself, family and friends. I then officially launched Shadow & Line in Summer 2020, shortly after Covid-19 hit. I was home-schooling my two boys at the time and absolutely loved having a passion of my own that I could escape to.

How long have you worked at Shadow & Line and what is your job role?

My job roles are basically absolutely everything – Silversmith, Designer, Marketing Guru, Social Media Expert, Administrator, Finance and Chief Tea-maker!!

What is the Shadow & Line ethos?

To create modern minimal jewellery for everyday wear which often takes inspiration from urban architecture, shadows and patterns.

What’s the best bit of advice you could give to anyone looking at working in your line of work?

Just go for it and use your passion and determination to enjoy what you want to do!

What do you love most about Liverpool?

I love Liverpool’s hustle & bustle, diversity and of course discovering amazing architecture all over the city.

If you could describe your business in 3 words what would they be?

Contemporary, minimal, classic.
