SERIES ONE – EDITION TEN
In the tenth edition in the Faces behind the business series we caught up with Andre Carrington, creator of Desserts by Dre; a cake making business.

When Did you first get into the industry?
I have been Chef for the best part of 14 years and got my first bit of training at a popular Mediterranean Restaurant brand in the north west, mostly working in pubs and casual dining establishments. I Always wanted to learn how to be a pastry chef professionally but never got the chance to pursue that side of the business.
How long have you worked at Desserts by Dre and what is your job role?
I started desserts by Dre almost 2 years ago. It was just a very casual business where I would do cake for friends and the occasional Makers market at the Bombed-out Church. I was still working full time, so it was exceedingly difficult to strike that balance of growing and starting a business and keeping a steady income going.
What is Desserts by Dre Ethos?
I guess my ethos is Minding My Own Business . I strongly believe that it’s quite important to take care of your own business and not to judge and measure your success by the success of others. You set a goal and you reach out to achieve it. I suppose all I ever wanted to do was to provide an affordable high-quality product that can reach the masses. I live in my own little world as I often can get distracted quite easily, so Minding my own business keeps me quite grounded.

What’s the best advice you could give to anyone looking at working in your line of work?
Seeing the massive upsurge of cake business around, I would suggest, just try your very best to pick a product that you are comfortable and confident with and really work towards perfecting it and using it as your USP. Whether it is a particular flavour brownie or cookie. Stick to it and you will persevere.
What do you love most about Liverpool?
I moved to Liverpool 2 years ago but have been in the Uk for approximately 12 years. I would say that I finally feel at home in this city. It is so warm and welcoming with an eclectic mix of cultures and history. The scousers have a familiar sense of community which I admire and feels quite homely. I really love this city.
If you could describe your business in 3 words what would they be?
