The iconic Liverpool city centre pub Doctor Duncan’s has been closed while it has a £250,000 renovation, by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group. The city’s favourite pub will reopen in time for August Bank Holiday weekend.
The pub is named is named after William Henry Duncan, Liverpool and the UK’s first medical officer of health. Duncan was born and raised in Liverpool before attending Edinburgh University where he qualified as a medical doctor. After moving back to his hometown Doctor Duncan was appointed as Medical Health Officer on 1st January 1847, the first of this type of Senior Government role in Britain.
Sitting in the shadows of St George’s Hall and dating back to 1901, the historic pub was built to house Pearl Insurance and is well known for its elaborately tiled interior. Now, in honour of its namesake, it houses an authenTc Victorian pharmacy cabinet.
Re-iterating what he said back in 2018 following his takeover of the venue, Andrew Mikhail, Chairman of Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group, said of this exciting renovation:

The pub will reopen in Time for August Bank Holiday weekend and those visiting, on top of a fabulous new look, can expect great pub food, ideal for a quick lunch or after work meal, real ale and a drinks offering that the venue has become famous for over many years, always served with a warm welcome from a great team.
