BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend: Simple tips and reminders

Liverpool is gearing up to welcome thousands of music fans to Sefton Park for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend this week. To help everyone enjoy the event safely, the City Council’s Public Health team has shared a few helpful tips and reminders.

Running from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 May, the festival invites attendees to fully enjoy the celebrations—whether you’re dancing in the sunshine or simply soaking up the atmosphere. A bit of preparation can go a long way in helping you stay happy, healthy, and safe throughout the weekend.

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend: Simple tips and reminders

Weather and Hydration

Liverpool’s weather can be unpredictable, so please come prepared. If it’s sunny, wear sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, a wide-brimmed hat, UV-filtered sunglasses, and light, breathable clothing to stay cool. A raincoat or waterproof layer is also a good idea in case the weather turns.

Long days outdoors especially in the sun can lead to dehydration. Bring an empty refillable water bottle and use the free water stations across the site.

Be sure to drink water regularly, particularly if you’re also consuming alcohol.

Alcohol, Drugs, and Staying Safe

If you choose to drink alcohol, pace yourself. Eat beforehand, alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks, and know your limits.

If you or a friend feel unwell or overly intoxicated ask event staff for help. They’re there to support you.

Drug use is illegal and not permitted at the event. If you or someone you are with has a bad reaction, seek help from event staff immediately.

To stay safe from drink spiking, buy your own drinks and don’t accept drinks from strangers. Never leave your drink unattended. If something doesn’t feel right, speak to a member of the welfare team immediately.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

Although exciting, large events like Big Weekend can also feel overwhelming especially for those who may be experiencing mental health challenges.

If you’re feeling anxious, low, or just not yourself, it’s important to know that support is available.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing & Culture said:

“Seeing so many people come together in Sefton Park for this incredible line-up is something really special for Liverpool. It highlights how well our city delivers major events and celebrates culture.

“While there’s so much fun to be had, it’s also important to make safe choices and if needed, take advantage of the support available.”

Professor Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, said:

“We want everyone attending Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool to have a fantastic experience and that includes staying safe and looking after your health.

“Simple steps like staying hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun, and practising good hand hygiene can make a big difference in helping everyone enjoy the event to the fullest.”

“This will be a true party in the park, and a brilliant opportunity to create lasting memories. Enjoy the atmosphere, have fun and remember that support is available if you need it.”
