Avanti West Coast has revealed it generated £470 million in social value over the past year, supporting communities, education, employment and local economies across its UK rail network, including Liverpool and the wider North West.
The intercity train operator announced the figures in its latest annual social value report, highlighting the positive impact of its community programmes, partnerships and investment in the regions it serves.
Operating services between major destinations including Liverpool, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and North Wales, Avanti West Coast says its activities have helped deliver almost half a billion pounds in social, environmental and economic benefits.
Of the £470 million total, almost £300 million was attributed to community-focused activities and local engagement, demonstrating the importance of the railway’s role beyond transporting passengers.
Avanti West Coast supports 290 community initiatives
Over the past 12 months, Avanti West Coast supported 290 community initiatives, an increase of more than 100 compared with the previous year.
Projects included community gardening schemes at railway stations, foodbank collections, coffee mornings, book-sharing spaces and initiatives delivered through Community Rail Partnerships.
These activities aim to strengthen connections between railway stations and the communities they serve, while creating opportunities for local organisations, volunteers and residents to get involved.
The report also highlighted the company’s work with local authorities, community groups and industry partners to improve stations and transport connectivity.
These partnerships generated an estimated £3.6 million in social value, with examples including improvements at Coventry station, the opening of a new station pub in Carlisle and an integrated rail and bus travel scheme connecting Keswick and the North Lakes.
Thousands of young people benefit from railway education programmes
Education and career development formed another important part of Avanti West Coast’s social value achievements.
More than 2,000 young people benefited from educational programmes designed to introduce them to opportunities within the railway industry.
Among the initiatives was Feel Good Futures, which gives secondary school pupils the chance to experience railway journeys while learning about potential careers in transport.
The operator also worked with Springpod, a virtual work experience platform that helps young people explore different railway roles and understand the skills required to enter the industry.
These programmes aim to inspire the next generation of railway professionals while helping young people discover career opportunities they may not have previously considered.
Supporting local businesses and regional economies
Avanti West Coast’s report also highlighted its contribution to regional economic growth through its supply chain and employment opportunities.
Around 70% of the company’s suppliers are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), helping support businesses and employment across the regions connected by the West Coast Main Line.
The operator also invested significantly in developing its workforce, with more than 3,000 employees completing a combined total of over 100,000 hours of training during the reporting period.
Staff wellbeing initiatives included Mental Health First Aid training and workplace health checks, reflecting the company’s focus on supporting employees alongside its wider community commitments.
New framework measures the railway’s social impact
The annual report was launched at the London headquarters of the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), which helped develop the new Rail Social Value Framework.
Avanti West Coast has adopted the industry-wide framework for the first time to assess how its activities contribute to wider social, environmental and economic outcomes.
The approach is designed to provide a more consistent way of measuring the benefits generated by railway operators, helping identify where future investment and community initiatives could make the greatest difference.
The company has also been shortlisted in the Private Sector Leadership category at the 2026 Social Value Awards, having previously won the category in 2025.
This year’s awards ceremony will take place in Liverpool on 3 December 2026, bringing national recognition of social value initiatives to the city.
Avanti West Coast committed to making a positive difference
Andy Mellors, Managing Director at Avanti West Coast, said:
“The West Coast Main Line is a key route connecting many of the UK’s busiest, vibrant and diverse cities and communities and we play an essential role in enabling economic growth and supporting social and environmental initiatives.
“We are committed to making sure that Avanti West Coast delivers a railway that is not only efficient and reliable, but one that makes a positive and lasting difference to the customers and communities we are proud to serve.”
The latest figures underline the operator’s efforts to support communities beyond its core rail services, with investment in education, employment, local businesses and community projects continuing across its network.
For Liverpool and the wider North West, the report highlights the role that major transport connections can play in supporting regional development and creating opportunities for local people.
