Merseyside Police are encouraging football fans to enjoy tonight’s game safely

Merseyside Police are encouraging football fans ahead of the Euro 2020 semi-final tonight (Wednesday 7 July) to enjoy the event safely and report any incidents or concerns to the police.

Merseyside will see high visibility patrols stepped up in anticipation for a busy night, particularly in city and town centre and are reminding fans to plan ahead, stay safe and respect Covid-19 rules.

Liverpool Community Policing Superintendent Diane Pownall said:

“This has been a great tournament so far – with a clean sheet for England – and after a difficult year it’s great that people are out celebrating and enjoying themselves.

“We want people across Merseyside to enjoy the event, and while we don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, I’d like to stress that we won’t tolerate anti-social, violent or hate crime under any circumstances.

“We want people to ask themselves whether they want to have their night ended early – possibly even before a match has kicked off – because they are refused entry to a pub or bar having consumed too much alcohol too early. So please, drink sensibly and enjoy watching the games with friends.

“Anyone who is going out to watch the game will need to plan ahead and think about where they’re going, whether they need to book a table, and how they’re getting home.

“If you’re planning on having a drink – please leave your car at home and take a taxi or public transport.  Don’t risk your life and those of others by drink driving.

“Finally, Covid-19 still poses a risk to public health and there are still some restrictions in place.  These include no more than 30 people together outdoors, no more than six people or two households together indoors, social distancing and wearing a mask when indoors.”

Please report any concerns to Merseyside Police via @MerPolCC on Twitter, or the Contact Centre on Facebook, or call 101 Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

If it’s not urgent, please report online via our website: Report a crime | Merseyside Police. Always call 999 in an emergency.
