Hosted by National Museums Liverpool shows support to local food bank

Following closures of local museums and galleries to support efforts to contain the spread of Coronavirus, the events and catering teams at National Museums Liverpool have donated a number of crucial food items and ingredients, alongside bottled soft drinks, to Knowsley’s Big Help Project food bank.

The contribution included a variety of produce that was no longer required or was due to go out of date, after National Museums Liverpool announced that its venues would be temporarily closed in line with government advice.

James Behan, Head Chef at National Museums Liverpool, said:

“We were able to donate all of our prepared sandwiches, cakes and fresh produce, like milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables to the Big Help Project, who were then able to divide it between various food banks and kitchens. I went along with the courier driver on the day and to say they were happy with the donation is an understatement. We are making a second delivery of dry food and drink that will go past its best before date before we reopen.”

Katie Roberts, Head of Events at National Museums Liverpool, added:

“With city-wide closures across restaurants, bars and venues, and an uncertainty around how long social distancing measures will last, we wanted to do our part to help support the community’s most vulnerable. Although it’s a small gesture, it was the least that we could do, particularly with supermarkets currently running short on essential items. In this challenging time, we would like to encourage everyone to play their part and support their community in whatever way they can, while thinking of the safety and wellbeing of themselves and others.”

The Big Help Project in Knowsley provides supplies to locals who are living through a food crisis. The initiative accepts donations from a variety of sources including businesses, churches, schools and individuals. The project has ten centres across the Knowsley area where locals can redeem their vouchers.
