A new Liverpool bar has officially opened its doors today, bringing a historic name back to the city centre’s nightlife scene.

The Black Horse & Rainbow has launched on Berry Street in the Ropewalks, transforming the former Red Door site into a new three-storey venue focused on drinks, food, live entertainment and outdoor social spaces.

The opening marks the return of a name with strong links to Liverpool’s hospitality history, with the venue taking inspiration from the original Black Horse and Rainbow, which opened on Berry Street in 1990.

Independent hospitality operator DGB Hospitality Group has invested £750,000 into the redevelopment, creating a new destination for visitors and locals in one of Liverpool’s busiest nightlife districts.

Located at 21-23 Berry Street, the venue is set to become a new focal point for socialising in the Ropewalks.

New Liverpool Bar Brings Back Historic Black Horse & Rainbow Name

The new venue has been designed to celebrate the building’s heritage while introducing a modern hospitality experience.

The three-storey site includes a 250-capacity beer garden, outdoor heated terrace space and a dedicated function room, giving customers plenty of options for drinks, events and gatherings throughout the year.

The Black Horse & Rainbow will serve a range of continental beers, cocktails, wines and spirits, alongside nostalgic bar snacks and a garden barbecue menu designed around relaxed outdoor dining and social occasions.

Berry Street Venue Begins New Chapter

The building has played several roles throughout its history, previously operating as The Masonic Arms, Trader Jacks, The Metropolitan and later Red Door.

DGB Hospitality Group said the aim behind the redevelopment was to bring a sense of nostalgia back to the historic site while creating a fresh experience for a new generation of Liverpool visitors.

The Black Horse & Rainbow becomes the latest addition to DGB Hospitality Group’s Liverpool portfolio, joining venues including Gloria’s, Petit Café Berry Street, Petit Café Lark Lane, Loretta’s, Three Piggies, Pogue Mahone, Motel and Teddy’s.
