One of Southport’s best-loved family attractions is marking a major milestone this summer as Southport Crazy Golf, also known as The Masters Putting Green, celebrates its 60th anniversary.
First opening its doors in 1965, the 18-hole course has been a favourite with locals and visitors alike for six decades. Nestled in the heart of Kings Gardens, alongside the Marine Lake, it offers a traditional seaside experience surrounded by other long-standing attractions including the Southport Model Railway Village, Marine Lake boats, Silcock’s Carousel and Funland, Adventure Coast Southport and the miniature railway.
Open daily (weather permitting) from 10am to 6pm, the course costs just £5 per person for a full round. Players who ring the bell on the 19th hole are rewarded with a free game – a tradition that remains as popular as ever.
The course was originally launched in 1965 under the ‘Arnold Palmer’ franchise by Mr Law, a keen Scottish golfer who realised his dream of running his own putting course. It was the first of its kind in the UK and, remarkably, is still run by the same family today.
Fondly known as ‘Southport’s Crazy Golf’, the course features a mix of nostalgic and challenging obstacles including the Windmill, Lighthouse, Hurdy-Gurdy, Helter Skelter, Watermill and even a Space Race-inspired Rocket Ship – a nod to the era in which it was first built.
Accessible, family-friendly and fun for all ages, Southport Crazy Golf continues to capture the spirit of the classic British seaside. With its quirky obstacles and timeless charm, it remains a must-visit for generations of visitors enjoying Southport’s famous waterfront.
