The Plaza Community Cinema in Liverpool is set to host a special evening with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins.
The event celebrates the launch of his latest book, On Cinematography, and will feature an in-depth in-conversation session followed by a screening of the beloved classic The Shawshank Redemption.
Spanning more than 400 richly illustrated pages, On Cinematography offers readers an intimate journey through the extraordinary career and creative philosophy of one of the most influential visual storytellers in film history.
The book traces Deakins’ evolution from his early years in Torquay and his documentary roots to his era-defining collaborations with directors such as Joel and Ethan Coen, Sam Mendes, and Denis Villeneuve.
Insights from a Master of Visual Storytelling
Widely regarded as one of the greatest cinematographers of all time, Deakins has received 16 Academy Award nominations and won two Oscars for his work on Blade Runner 2049 and 1917.
This event provides film enthusiasts and aspiring creatives with a rare opportunity to hear directly from Deakins about his artistic process and his enduring passion for the craft.
Joining Roger on stage will be his wife and longtime creative collaborator, James Deakins.
Having played a vital role throughout his iconic career, James will join Roger for an audience Q&A, sharing behind-the-scenes stories from some of cinema’s most celebrated productions.
Matt Owen, Director of Development and Education at the Plaza, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Roger and James Deakins to the Plaza for what promises to be a truly special evening.
“Opportunities to hear from a cinematographer of Roger’s calibre, whose work includes films such as Sicario and No Country for Old Men, are incredibly rare.
“This event offers filmmakers, students and cinema audiences a unique chance to gain insight into one of the most influential careers in modern filmmaking.”
