Filming for Sam Mendes’ highly anticipated Beatles films has returned to Liverpool, with Liverpool Town Hall being used to recreate one of the most memorable moments in the band’s history.
Film crews were at the historic Dale Street landmark on Sunday, 20 September, as production continued on The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.
Images captured at Liverpool Town Hall show filming taking place around the iconic building, with the scenes understood to be recreating The Beatles’ triumphant return to Liverpool in July 1964.
The original homecoming took place on 10 July 1964, when John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr returned to their home city at the height of Beatlemania.
After arriving at Liverpool’s Speke Airport, the group travelled through the city before attending a civic reception at Liverpool Town Hall. Huge crowds lined the route, with contemporary reports estimating that around 200,000 people turned out across Liverpool to welcome them home.
One of the defining images of the day came when all four Beatles appeared on the Town Hall balcony, greeting the crowds gathered below.
Their visit was followed later that day by the northern premiere of the band’s first feature film, A Hard Day’s Night, making 10 July 1964 one of the most memorable days in Liverpool’s Beatles story.
Beatles filming continues across Liverpool
The latest shoot is another major Liverpool location to feature in director Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-film project, which has been filming in and around the city during 2026.
Earlier this year, streets and buildings across Liverpool were transformed to recreate different periods of the band’s story, including filming around John Lennon’s childhood home Mendips on Menlove Avenue and other locations in south Liverpool.
More recently, filming has continued in the city, including scenes recreating the famous day when a teenage Paul McCartney first met John Lennon at the St Peter’s Church garden fete in Woolton in 1957.
The production consists of four separate feature films, with each telling the Beatles story from the perspective of an individual member of the band.
Harris Dickinson will play John Lennon, Paul Mescal will portray Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn stars as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan takes on the role of Ringo Starr.
The project is the first time Apple Corps Ltd, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison have granted full life-story and music rights for a scripted film project about the group.
All four films are currently scheduled for theatrical release in April 2028.
For Liverpool, today’s filming brings the story almost full circle more than six decades after thousands packed the city centre to welcome The Beatles home, Liverpool Town Hall is once again playing its part in telling the story of the Fab Four.
