A major new exhibition celebrating 70 years of The Cavern Club is set to open at the Museum of Liverpool in January 2027.
Opening on 16 January 2027, exactly 70 years after the legendary venue first welcomed music lovers through its doors, the exhibition will tell the story of how a small cellar club on Mathew Street became one of the world’s most famous live music venues.
Developed in collaboration with The Cavern Club, the exhibition will explore the venue’s rich history through photographs, objects, film, music and personal stories, highlighting its lasting influence on Liverpool’s cultural identity and the global music scene.
Discover the story behind Liverpool’s most famous music venue
The exhibition will take visitors on a journey through The Cavern Club’s remarkable history, from its beginnings as a post-war jazz club to becoming the internationally recognised birthplace of The Beatles and the heart of the Merseybeat movement.
Alongside telling the story of the club itself, the exhibition will explore how Liverpool’s social, cultural and economic history has shaped the venue over the past seven decades.
Visitors will also hear first-hand accounts from musicians, fans and members of the local community, bringing to life the stories and memories that have helped define The Cavern Club’s place in Liverpool history.
Celebrating seven decades of unforgettable performances
While forever associated with The Beatles, the exhibition will also celebrate the countless artists who have performed on The Cavern stage since it first opened in 1957.
Over the years, music legends including The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Oasis, Adele and Jamie Webster have all performed at the iconic venue, helping cement its reputation as one of the world’s most celebrated live music destinations.
Through a collection of historic artefacts, photographs and audio-visual displays, visitors will discover how The Cavern has continued to inspire generations of musicians and attract music fans from across the globe.
The exhibition opens at the Museum of Liverpool on 16 January 2027, with tickets set to go on sale later this year.
Members of National Museums Liverpool will receive priority booking and free entry as part of their membership benefits.
Marking one of Liverpool’s most famous cultural landmarks, the exhibition promises to offer a fascinating look at the venue that helped shape popular music and continues to draw visitors from around the world.
