Liverpool Cathedral to Host a Grand Performance of One of the Great Choral Masterpieces

  • April 20, 2026
  • By Editor - Elliot Thompson

Liverpool Cathedral is set to host a magnificent performance of one of the great masterpieces in the choral repertoire, as Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah is brought to life in the breathtaking surroundings of Liverpool Cathedral on 16th May.

This famous and dramatic oratorio tells the story of the prophet Elijah, as depicted in books 1 and 2 Kings in the Old Testament.

Through moments of deep faith, struggle and divine encounter, Mendelssohn’s rich and expressive score creates a moving and unforgettable musical journey to be enjoyed.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said:

“I am looking forward to welcoming all who will be coming to the Cathedral for Felix Mendelssohn’s, Elijah.

“Within this warm and sacred space, the powerful sound of the choir, orchestra and Cathedral organ will no doubt unite us in faith, lifting our spirits as the audience get to experience Elijah in a setting that enhances both its drama and beauty.

“And let’s not forget, this will be one of Ian Tracey’s final performances as Cathedral Organist, making the occasion all the more memorable.”

A Grand Scale Collaboration

This full-work performance will bring together the Liverpool Cathedral Choir alongside a massed choir of singers from across the North West, flooding the Cathedral with an extraordinary depth of sound.

Stephen Mannings, Director of Music at Liverpool Cathedral, said:

“Mendelssohn’s Elijah ranks alongside Handel’s Messiah as being one of the all-time great oratorios.

“We have 350 singers in our chorus alongside the wonderful soloists mentioned.

“Andrew Greenan – principal soloist – first sang the role of Elijah exactly 40 years ago in Liverpool Cathedral, so it’s fantastic to have him reprise this role with us.

“An ensemble of 40 players from the Liverpool Concert Orchestra and the cathedral organ played by Professor Ian Tracey will add breathtaking majesty to the combined choral sound as we bring to life one of the most remembered biblical narratives.

“This is a concert not to be missed.”

Significant Milestone for Ian Tracey

The role of Elijah will be performed by Andrew Greenan, joined by an outstanding line-up of soloists: Kelsey Thomas, Joyce Tindsley and Stefan Kennedy.

The performance will be accompanied by the Liverpool Concert Orchestra, with the Cathedral organ played by Ian Tracey in what will be one of his final major performances before he retires as Organist of Liverpool Cathedral later this year.

Ian became the youngest cathedral organist in the UK when he was appointed to Liverpool Cathedral in 1980.

He is as much an institution at the Cathedral as the organ over which he has presided for the past 46 years, making this an especially significant and poignant occasion.

Tickets are going fast, so booking early is advised to avoid missing out.
