Liverpool has proudly joined cities across the UK and Ireland in celebrating the official launch of UEFA EURO 2028, marking the start of the countdown to what will be the biggest UEFA European Championship ever staged.
At precisely 20:28, civic and sporting leaders gathered in London to celebrate the milestone event. Representing the city and wider region were Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, and Councillor Mike Wharton, Deputy Mayor of the Combined Authority. Colin Chong, Everton FC’s Chief Real Estate and Regeneration Officer, was also in attendance, as details were revealed confirming that Liverpool will host five matches at the new Everton Stadium on the city’s waterfront in June 2028.
The four group-stage games and one round-of-16 fixture will take place on:
- Sunday, 11 June
- Wednesday, 14 June
- Saturday, 17 June
- Tuesday, 20 June
- Saturday, 24 June
Kick-off times will be announced following the official team draw in December 2027.
To mark the occasion, Liverpool’s official tournament logo lit up some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Cunard Building and the Royal Albert Dock, with the design also appearing across digital screens throughout the city.
The logo features the Royal Liver Building, one of Liverpool’s most recognisable symbols. Built in 1911, its twin towers are famously topped by the 5.5-metre Liver Birds, the mythical guardians watching over the city and all who arrive by sea.
Meanwhile, the Everton Stadium also proudly showcased its bespoke UEFA EURO 2028 branding, sparking excitement among fans as anticipation begins to build over the next three years. The matches are expected to generate a multi-million-pound boost for the local economy, bringing visitors, investment and international attention to Liverpool and the wider region.
A record 24 nations will compete in the tournament between 9 June and 9 July 2028, with organisers promising an unforgettable festival of football. More than three million tickets will be available for supporters attending matches across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Under the theme “We Speak Football”, the tournament celebrates the shared language of football through the cheers, chants and passion of fans across the continent.
UEFA EURO 2028 UK & Ireland will also deliver the largest-ever community programme for a European Championship, led by local partners in each host nation. These initiatives aim to harness the power of sport and culture to unite communities, champion inclusivity, celebrate volunteers and community heroes, and use football as a catalyst for positive change, building pride, belonging and a more sustainable future for the game.
Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said:
“Everton’s new Stadium is already helping to boost Liverpool’s profile nationally and internationally. Hosting UEFA EURO 2028 matches here will further cement our reputation as a city that delivers world-class events and unforgettable experiences for fans and visitors alike.
“We are working on building an event of excellence and inspiration, a welcoming, safe and sustainable UEFA EURO that enhances football development and creates lasting community benefits far beyond the pitch. The countdown is truly on now to what will be an unforgettable summer of football.”
Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, said:
“Being part of another major international sporting event is a huge honour for our region and one we are immensely proud to be part of. UEFA EURO 2028 is not just about football – it’s about showcasing our world-class hospitality, culture and community spirit on a global stage. We’ve proven time and again that we can deliver unforgettable experiences, and I’m confident we’ll do it again in 2028.
“We’re ready to deliver the best-ever EURO in 2028. It will be a festival of everything we love about the game – its passion, inclusivity and ability to bring people together.”
Angus Kinnear, Chief Executive Officer of Everton Football Club said:
“This is a proud moment for Everton and for our new waterfront home. Our stadium was designed to host the biggest moments in sport, and to see it formally part of the venue schedule for UEFA EURO 2028 is a landmark in the Club’s history.
“The tournament will showcase the best of our city and our new stadium to millions of people around the world. It will also deliver a significant economic boost for Liverpool City Region, bringing new visitors, new spend and new profile to the waterfront and the wider economy.
