Liverpool Cathedral is set to be transformed into a spectacular world of light, sound and storytelling this Christmas as Noël, a brand-new immersive experience from Luxmuralis, makes its world premiere.
Taking place from 27 November to 5 December 2026, the magical Christmas light show will bring Liverpool Cathedral to life with breathtaking projections, atmospheric music and festive storytelling, offering families an unforgettable experience in one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The immersive installation will see the Cathedral’s towering arches, ceilings and historic stonework illuminated with extraordinary visual displays, taking visitors on a journey through Christmases past while celebrating treasured festive memories.
Noël Brings a Spectacular Christmas Light Show to Liverpool
Created by Luxmuralis, the artistic collaboration between visual artist Peter Walker and composer David Harper, Noël combines cutting-edge projection technology with original music and storytelling.
Working alongside a team of technical specialists, the artists will transform Liverpool Cathedral into a living canvas, creating a magical festive experience suitable for visitors of all ages.
The show promises to celebrate the wonder and beauty of Christmas while offering audiences the opportunity to experience the Cathedral’s remarkable architecture in an entirely new way.
Constellation Installation to Feature Thousands of Stars Created by Liverpool Schoolchildren
Alongside Noël, this year’s celebrations will introduce Constellation, a new artwork by Peter Walker featuring thousands of delicate paper stars created by local schoolchildren.
Displayed in the Cathedral’s Derby Transept for the first time, the installation will form a glowing celestial landscape, with each star carrying a personal message of hope, love or reflection.
Described as a ‘galaxy of voices’, Constellation will bring together contributions from children and young people across the Liverpool region, celebrating themes of belonging, community and togetherness.
Specially created educational resources for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils will encourage young people to explore the symbolism of stars at Christmas, develop creative writing skills and express their thoughts through art.
Schools will also have the opportunity to visit Liverpool Cathedral and create their own stars, which will become part of the finished installation.
Liverpool Cathedral Celebrates the Hope and Spirit of Christmas
The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said:
“At the heart of Noël is the extraordinary Christian proclamation that light enters the darkness and love comes among us in the birth of Jesus. The thousands of stars created by children across our region will remind us both of the star that guided people towards Christ and of our shared longing for peace, love and reconciliation in our world.
“Liverpool Cathedral exists as a place of encounter and welcome. We look forward to opening our doors to people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs as we share the hope of the Christmas story via this amazing new addition to the show.”
Peter Walker, Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, added:
“We are delighted to bring Noël to Liverpool Cathedral, creating an immersive light and sound experience that celebrates the wonder, beauty and spirit of Christmas.
“Through light, music and projection, we are inviting visitors to pause, look up and experience the cathedral in a completely new way. Noël is an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, share in the magic of the festive season and discover the extraordinary beauty of this iconic space.”
