Liverpool Cathedral shines bright with a spectacular light and sound show

Liverpool Cathedrals presents a festive light and sound show that aims to take visitors on an unforgettable journey through the very first Christmas. The breathtaking experience begins this evening (2 December) at Liverpool Cathedral and runs every evening until 9 December.

‘The Light Before Christmas: The Angels Are Coming!’ is set to transform the magnificent interior of Liverpool Cathedral with a carefully orchestrated sequence of mesmerising projections and specially composed music, inspired by one of the greatest stories ever told.

The captivating after-dark experience is the work of Luxmuralis, an artistic collaboration renowned for creating extraordinary immersive art installations, including the sell-out ‘Space, The Universe and Everything’, which came to Liverpool Cathedral earlier this year.

Speaking on returning to Liverpool Cathedral, this time with a Christmas son-et-lumière performance, Peter Walker, Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, said:

“It’s a huge honour to be bringing ‘The Light Before Christmas: The Angels Are Coming!’ to Liverpool Cathedral and we’re incredibly excited about lighting up the iconic building’s stunning Gothic architecture during the Advent season.”

“We’re really looking forward to seeing visitors of all ages lose themselves in the kaleidoscopic projections and atmospheric music, which fuse together the traditional Nativity story with present day celebrations, as we depict Christmas in a modern and artistic way.”

The Dean of Liverpool, The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, said:

“Advent is such a wonderful time. We’re delighted to be working with Luxmuralis to bring a message of peace, joy and hope to the city with ‘The Light Before Christmas: The Angels Are Coming!’.

“I’m sure visitors will find a sense of serenity in this a truly uplifting experience, which offers a perfect opportunity for families, friends and members of the community to come together for reflection as we are reminded of the real meaning of Christmas.”

The experience, which lasts around 40 minutes, runs from 4.30pm – 8.30pm with sessions starting every 15 minutes. Tickets are available at £8 (adults), £6 (children) or £25 (family ticket for 2 adults and 3 children), plus booking fee. Entry is free for infants under 3. Tickets must be booked in advance at ticketquarter.co.uk.

‘The Light Before Christmas: The Angels Are Coming!’ forms part of a two-year programme of events, exhibitions and artworks leading up to Liverpool Cathedral’s 100th anniversary, which falls in 2024.
