How Base Kitchen grew from a Liverpool home kitchen into an award-winning food business

How Base Kitchen grew from a Liverpool home kitchen into an award-winning food business

Base Kitchen Liverpool is a growing local food business that began with one woman preparing healthy meals from her home kitchen and has since developed into an award-winning breakfast, lunch and meal-prep destination.

Based on East Prescot Road, close to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Base Kitchen offers breakfast, lunch and freshly prepared meal-prep options for people looking for convenient food without compromising on flavour.

The business was previously known as The Weight Loss Prep Kitchen, a name that became familiar to customers across Liverpool through its calorie-conscious meals, weekly preparation plans and popular takeaway menu.

Now trading as Base Kitchen, the new identity reflects how the business has grown beyond its original weight-loss focus, creating a more welcoming food and lifestyle concept where customers can eat in, collect their meals or arrange delivery.

A business built from personal experience

The story behind Base Kitchen began with founder Leanne Wall and her own interest in fitness, nutrition and healthier home cooking.

After spending time working around gyms and speaking to people who struggled to prepare nutritious food alongside busy jobs and family lives, Leanne recognised an opportunity.

Many people wanted to make healthier choices but did not always have the time, confidence or energy to plan meals, shop for ingredients and cook everything from scratch.

Starting without outside funding or significant savings, Leanne began preparing meals from her home kitchen. What started as a small idea gradually developed into a growing local business supported by repeat customers and an active social media community.

The Weight Loss Prep Kitchen was officially incorporated in May 2021, with the business later establishing its home at 212 East Prescot Road.

From the beginning, the aim was to show that food designed to support a healthier lifestyle did not need to feel restrictive or repetitive.

Instead, the business focused on familiar dishes, generous flavours and meals that could fit more easily into everyday life.

Making meal preparation more convenient

Meal preparation remains at the heart of Base Kitchen.

Fresh dishes are prepared each week, giving customers a convenient option for lunches, evening meals or busy days when cooking is not practical. Recent menus have included a rotating selection of chicken, pork, rice, pasta and vegetable-based dishes, with orders prepared for weekly collection or delivery.

Alongside its prepared meals, the East Prescot Road kitchen has developed a much broader daytime menu.

Customers can choose from breakfast wraps, bagels, full English breakfast boxes, granola, smoothies, sandwiches, rice and pasta dishes, wraps and lighter options.

Popular choices have included salt and pepper chicken, Cajun chicken pasta and toasted chicken wraps, helping the business appeal to customers looking for everything from a quick breakfast to a filling lunchtime meal.

The wider menu is an important part of the move to Base Kitchen. While healthier choices and meal preparation remain central to the business, the new concept is designed to feel inclusive rather than being aimed solely at people actively trying to lose weight.

From local idea to award-winning business

The growth of the business has also brought national recognition.

In 2023, The Weight Loss Prep Kitchen was named Healthy Eating Company of the Year at the British Fitness Awards, placing ahead of other shortlisted businesses from across the country.

The achievement marked a significant moment for a company that had begun in a home kitchen only a few years earlier.

However, awards are only one part of the Base Kitchen story.

Leanne has also used the business and its growing online platform to support the local community. Previous initiatives have included providing free Christmas dinners to vulnerable people and organising a Christmas grotto with free presents for children.

That community focus has helped the business build a following that goes beyond its food.

Customers regularly interact with the team through social media, where new menus, meal-prep collections, behind-the-scenes videos and updates from the kitchen are shared.

A new chapter for Base Kitchen

The move from The Weight Loss Prep Kitchen to Base Kitchen represents more than a change of name.

It reflects how the original idea has developed into a broader destination for breakfast, lunch, meal preparation and everyday food.

The new branding introduces Base Kitchen as a place where customers can sit down and eat as well as order food for collection or delivery. Its social media describes the business as a new concept centred around breakfast, lunch, meal prep and lifestyle.

Despite that evolution, the foundations of the business remain the same: home-style food, convenient preparation and an understanding of how difficult it can be to maintain healthier routines around work, family and other commitments.

From preparing the first meals at home to opening a physical Liverpool kitchen and receiving national recognition, Leanne’s journey shows how a simple idea can grow through determination, consistency and the support of a loyal local customer base.

Base Kitchen can be found at 212 East Prescot Road, Liverpool, L14 5NG, opposite Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Customers can follow @base_kitchen_ltd on Instagram for menus, ordering information and the latest updates.
