Music lovers across Merseyside can look forward to a spectacular evening of classical music as the iconic surroundings of Liverpool Cathedral prepare to host a legendary masterpiece this autumn.
The building is set to host a performance of Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, 3rd October, bringing one of history’s most celebrated musical works to life in the heart of the city.
As one of history’s most loved oratorios, Messiah tells the powerful story of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ.
First performed in Dublin back in 1742, and later for King George II in London, this timeless masterpiece has endured through the ages and continues to captivate audiences across the globe today.
The upcoming event continues the proud local legacy of what has become affectionately known as the ‘Two Cathedrals Messiah’.
This special tradition brings together the choirs of Liverpool Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir to perform alongside the talented musicians of the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra.
The grand performance will also feature skilled organist Ian Wells and a line-up of stellar soloists, including Barbara Ruzsics, Danielle Thomas, and Damian O’Keeffe.
With its grand, rich storytelling and thrilling choruses, the production offers an unforgettable experience of classical music, whether it be for the seasoned enthusiast or someone experiencing it for the very first time.
The evening will include the world-famous ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ – during which audiences traditionally stand, a historic custom often attributed to the belief that King George II did so himself at the London premiere.
Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Liverpool Cathedral, organisers are urging people not to miss their chance to experience the timeless beauty of the piece in person.

“Handel’s Messiah, which alternates annually between ourselves at Liverpool Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral, is one of the true masterpieces in the choral repertoire.
“I am pleased to welcome all who will visit the Cathedral for what promises to be a magnificent performance.”
By combining the vocal talents of both congregations, the event creates a massive, resonant sound designed to perfectly complement the soaring architecture of the venue.
