Ever since its May 2023 opening, Liverpool’s CONTENT has solidified its position as one of the UK’s most in-demand venues for live music and events.
Stereolab, Craig Charles Funk & Soul House Party, Homotopia’s 20th anniversary launch, Caroline Polachek, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Maisie Peters, Pretenders with Chrissie Hynde, Stereolab, and an amazing run of shows were all part of last year’s festivities.
Now that 2024 has arrived, there are three must-see dates to begin the year: The Vaccines, Cheap Thrills, and Bill Ryder-Jones will all be performing at CONTENT in the upcoming weeks. Additional dates will be revealed soon.
First up on Saturday, January 13th, Rough Trade presents The Vaccines, a very special show. This special occasion honours the release of their brand-new album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations, which was made available on Friday, January 12th through Thirty Tigers. The song’s title is derived from a line that was misheard from Don McClean’s American Pie, which appropriately alludes to the demise of innocence and the American Dream in Justin Young’s opinion. The Vaccines are still an important band in the history of British rock, having amassed a staggering five UK Top 5 albums, including a Number 1 with 2012’s Come of Age, and a formidable live reputation built through arena-filling headline shows and unforgettable appearances at Glastonbury and Reading/Leeds.
Local pioneers of ScouseOn Saturday, March 2nd, The Cheap Thrills will play their biggest hometown show to date at CONTENT as part of a new “Keep Cheap” night. This show is going to be incredible, coming off of a sell-out show at the O2 Academy Liverpool, an appearance on Boss Night, and a massive Waterfront show with Britpop Heroes James. The Independent and The Evening Standard recognised The Cheap Thrills’ single “Reborn” from the previous year, and national radio stations BBC 6 Music and Radio X supported it.
Experience the captivating tunes of Liverpool legend and co-founder of The Coral, Bill Ryder-Jones, on Thursday, March 21st. His music lies at the intersection of introspection and redemption; he has mastered a unique and intimate mood that is executed with studio deftness and gives the listener a space to be themselves. On Friday, January 12, Bill’s most recent album, Iechyd Da, will be available through Domino Records. The last few years of creating other artists have given us the gentle prod to venture into new areas, from kids’ choirs and delicate strings to dramatically re-contextualized disco samples. These moments have been at times joyful and grand, at other times intimate and heartbreaking.
Mike Deane, CONTENT’s Head of Music, says:
“We’re all absolutely buzzing from such a strong launch as a new live music space in 2023 and attracting such a great range of world class artists, DJs and performers to this incredible new Liverpool venue. We’re working with everyone from local independents to established national promoters and curating a programme for 2024 which will build upon what we’ve started. And with The Vaccines, The Cheap Thrills and Bill Ryder-Jones up first, it’s a fantastic start with lots more to come.”
