Avanti West Coast generated more than £5 billion in value for the UK economy last year, including £1.2 billion in benefits across the North West, according to a new independent report.
The study, produced by transport consultancy Steer, examines the economic, social and environmental impact of the West Coast Main Line operator across the regions it serves.

Unveiled at Avanti West Coast’s annual Stakeholder Conference in Manchester, the report calculates that for every £1 invested in the operator’s services, workforce and supply chain, £5.10 of wider economic value is generated.
It estimates Avanti West Coast services provide more than £4 billion in economic, social and environmental benefits, including passenger time savings, reduced car and air travel and productivity gains created by connecting major UK cities.
According to the report, £1.6 billion of those benefits were generated in London, while the North West accounted for £1.2 billion.
A further £640.9 million was attributed to the West Midlands, around £304 million to Scotland and £154 million to Wales.
The report also highlights the environmental impact of rail travel, estimating that journeys made using Avanti West Coast services prevented more than two billion kilometres of road travel during 2025.
It claims this avoided around 261,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and generated environmental benefits worth more than £100 million, alongside wider benefits from reduced congestion.
More than one million domestic air journeys are also estimated to be avoided each year as passengers choose Avanti services instead, equivalent to preventing more than 114,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Avanti West Coast’s community partnerships, education programmes and accessibility initiatives generated approximately £471 million in social value, according to the study.
More than 2,000 young people were supported through education initiatives, while use of Passenger Assistance increased by 30 per cent and 290 community projects were delivered along the route.
The operator also spends more than £700 million with suppliers across the West Coast Main Line.
Around 20 per cent of that spending takes place in the North West, compared with 41 per cent in London, 17 per cent in the West Midlands and seven per cent each in Scotland and Wales.
Supplier contracts cover areas including train and station cleaning, catering, food and drink, fleet maintenance and upgrade programmes.
Avanti West Coast also invested around £100 million in its workforce through salaries, uniforms, equipment and training.
The report estimates that spending by Avanti employees and workers within its supply chain generates a further £523.1 million of activity in the wider economy, equivalent to supporting an additional 6,500 jobs across the UK.

Andy Mellors, Managing Director at Avanti West Coast, said:
“This report highlights the wider impact of Avanti West Coast in creating value through everyday railway journeys.
“We’re incredibly proud to serve the towns, cities and regions across the West Coast Main Line. It is important that the value we create extends beyond the railway itself – supporting jobs and businesses, improving connectivity between major economic centres, and delivering benefits for customers, communities and taxpayers alike.
“The true value of train travel is often overlooked, with each journey made having a different, individual reason. Our services enable people to travel for work, study, leisure, or to see friends and family, and provide access to opportunities which enable businesses to grow and allow communities to thrive.
“This report measures the value of connection in pounds, places and outcomes. But its real value is reflected in the opportunities created, the lives changed and the stories that unfold across our network every day.”
