Liverpool Cathedral awarded with Echo Church Silver Award

Liverpool Cathedral has announced it has been awarded the prestigious Eco Church Silver Award by A Rocha UK. This achievement highlights the Cathedral’s steadfast dedication to environmental sustainability and its role as a leader in eco-conscious church practices.

In this momentous year, marking the centenary of Liverpool Cathedral’s consecration in 1924, this award not only reflects the cathedral’s extraordinary achievements in sustainability and energy efficiency but also honours its deep-rooted tradition of progress and service to the community.

Liverpool Cathedral awarded with Echo Church Silver Award

The Eco Church Silver Award celebrates the Cathedral’s efforts to care for God’s creation, transforming its spaces into vibrant sanctuaries for wildlife and promoting sustainable practices that inspire the wider community.

This recognition is a milestone in Liverpool Cathedral’s ongoing mission to unite faith with action for the good of the planet. From buzzing insects to thriving plants, the Cathedral’s grounds are now living proof of what can be achieved when nature and community work hand in hand.

The Dean of Liverpool the very Revd Dr Sue Jones says:

“The staff at the Cathedral and those who have advised have worked really hard over the past year to gain this Silver Award. As a Cathedral we are delighted that this has been achieved after a lot of hard work to re-think our practices. Net Zero is really important to us and we will continue to strive for this and to care for God’s world.”

As part of its commitment to sustainability and creation care, Liverpool Cathedral will:

  • Display Its Achievement: Visitors will be able to view the Eco Church Silver Award certificate in the Cathedral, a visible reminder of its dedication to sustainability.
  • Inspire Others: The Cathedral aims to encourage churches across the Diocese of Liverpool to embrace sustainable practices and join the Eco Church movement. By sharing its journey and providing resources, the Cathedral hopes to support others in taking actionable steps toward caring for creation. This effort also ties into the Church of England’s ambitious Net Zero 2030 goal, demonstrating the importance of collective action in reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding the environment.
  • Support a Growing Initiative: By partnering with A Rocha UK, Liverpool Cathedral is helping expand the reach of the Eco Church programme, empowering all faith communities in the Diocese of Liverpool and further afield across the Church of England to take initiative towards the national Church’s Net Zero 2030 goal by making minor changes which can have a large impact.

Liverpool Cathedral invites everyone to be part of this journey. Whether through volunteering, donations to A Rocha UK, or taking simple steps toward sustainability, there are many ways to contribute to this movement. Together, we can ensure a thriving future for both people and the planet.
