Capsule of Culture remembering 2020 planned for Royal Liver Building Experience

  • October 6, 2020
  • Editor

A historic ‘Capsule of Culture’ remembering 2020 has been planned for the Royal Liver Building Experience, which will include content decided by community leaders as well as stars including Kim Cattrall, Trent Alexander-Arnold and The Vivienne.

Public and schools are invited to submit their ideas to commemorate the landmark moments of 2020.

Some of Merseyside’s biggest star names including actress Kim Cattrall and Liverpool FC star Trent Alexander-Arnold are partnering with the Royal Liver Building 360 tour and experience on a project to commemorate the landmark moments of 2020.

The ‘Capsule of Culture’, sponsored by MJ Quinn, will remember one of the most pivotal and poignant years in world history inside a time capsule which will be permanently displayed inside the Royal Liver Building.

Peter Johnson-Treherne from Royal Liver Building 360 said:

“The time capsule will mark the closing of one decade and the opening of a new one and will commemorate what has been one of the most significant years in world history.

“The Black Lives Matter movement, the devastating bushfires in Australia and of course the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown which engulfed the world mean that 2020 will be forever remembered.

We’ve also bore witness to Brexit and ‘Megxit’, the 75th anniversary of VE Day and we’ve rightfully celebrated our frontline workers in ways that we have never done before.

It has been a pressing, pivotal and poignant year in so many ways and we’ve still got a quarter of the year remaining including what could be the most consequential presidential election in American history.

In many ways it has been a year which we have pulled together and there are so many examples of incredible gestures from the people of Liverpool who’ve helped us all pull through.

The Capsule of Culture will recognise global events of the year but also moving moments which have defined our wonderful region and that have contributed to our cultural history. This is Liverpool’s way of remembering 2020. It will be on display in the world famous Royal LIver Building permanently.”

RU Paul’s Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne, Olympic Gold medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Denise Barrett-Baxendale, Chief Executive Officer at Everton Football Club and Maria Breslin, the first woman editor of the Liverpool Echo, will join Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall and football icon Trent Alexander-Arnold as part of a stellar line up of individuals who will help decide what goes inside the capsule when nominations have been submitted from the public and schools.

Councillor Anna Rothery, Liverpool’s first black Lord Mayor, will also be on the judging panel which will be chaired by Peter Johnson-Treherne, director of RLB360’s parent company, Heritage Great Britain.

Commenting on the Capsule of Culture Kim Cattrall said:

“This is a wonderful initiative and I am honoured to take part.”

RU Paul’s Drag Race UK winner, The Vivienne, added:

“I am really looking forward to seeing what items are put forward for the Capsule of Culture. It has been a memorable year to say the least. I think this is a fantastic way of immortalising a year that we will never forget.”

Liverpool schools and members of the public are being encouraged to submit ideas for the Capsule of Culture by emailing CAPSULE@RLB360.COM.

Those submitting ideas should include their contact details. The capsule will be unveiled in December.

RLB360 was opened by Heritage Great Britain in 2019 as the first ever tour and experience of the Royal Liver Building. The attraction celebrates the history of the building and includes an audio-visual experience inside the historic clock tower. The tour has been a hit with visitors from all over the world since opening.
