Former famous Liverpool pub The Denbigh Castle brought back to life

Closing its doors back in the late 1970s, The Denbigh Castle was a renowned city centre landmark for well over a century.

Now nearly 50 years on, the former famous alehouse is set to be reborn returning to its former glory. The premises has had name changes over the past years, including Walter’s and Jupiters, but the venue will once again return to its original roots and once again be known under its former name.

As co-owner Fiona Hornsby explained, “we were originally due to open at the end of March. When restrictions were lifted, we knew it was time to get back to it and have spent the last few weeks getting The Denbigh Castle ready.”

Researching the history of the building, the new owners Small Hands, charted its existence back to 1815 along with licensee William Williams.

The pub on Hackins Hey off Victoria Street and Dale Street was renamed Walters in the 1970’s and latterly Jupiter’s.

Fiona continued: “We have recreated a traditional pub by enhancing the features in the building where we could and have added some reclaimed artefacts to add more character.”

Speaking about their drinks, Fiona added: “It will be similar but not identical to sister pub in the Group, The Bridewell in that we have a focus on German lager, cask & craft beer and a vegan wine list.

“We will also have Sky Sports and BT Sport and plan to offer some social events in the future when we have more flexibility with seating.

“The downstairs bar will be open which helps us with social distancing but again will also be available to hire for events and parties in the future. Ultimately, we’re very proud to have got through this most difficult of times and have also created 12 new jobs in the process.”

Opening hours will be:

12pm – 11pm Sunday -Wednesday

12pm – 12pm Thursday- Friday
