The World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 (WGC2022) has launched its education programme with the aim of inspiring and raising aspirations of young people throughout Merseyside and across the UK.
The programme provides an opportunity to educate and engage children from early years through to Key Stage 3 with an Education Resource Pack available to schools. Designed in consultation with teachers, the pack includes cross-curricular worksheets, lesson plans and materials based on the SMSC Cultural Development guidelines, for children to ‘participate and respond to sporting and cultural opportunities.’ The resources involve fun, educational challenges, such as learning to commentate, having a go at medal design and gymnastics inspired physical activity.
Discussing the importance of the WGC2022 education programme, Stuart Campbell, Championships Director of the World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022, said:
“The World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 is an opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation. As part of the events legacy, we aim to leave a lasting impact on the city and its people, and this education programme helps us to achieve that. From learning new skills to understanding the importance of sport on wellbeing, the education pack includes a variety of resources to positively impact and educate a new generation.”
In addition to the Education Pack, schools will have the opportunity to attend the Championships and see the world’s greatest gymnasts on a global stage through the WGC2022 schools group offer. The offer includes a complimentary ticket for every nine tickets purchased for sessions on Monday 31 October 2022 and is available to all schools across the UK. This means nine young people can attend with a free adult for as little as £90 plus booking fee (subject to availability). “It’s a huge coup to have a major event such as the World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 taking place on our doorstep. It raises the city’s profile and helps to maintain Liverpool’s reputation as one of the leading cities in Europe when it comes to staging events.
“We hope as many young people as possible attend the Championships and are inspired by the incredible talent on display.”
The World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 is an Olympic qualifying event for the Paris 2024 games and will be one of the largest international sporting events ever to be held in the city. 550 gymnasts from 75 countries will compete in the global event at the M&S Bank Arena, which will take place from 29 October to 6 November 2022.
