Player ratings: Leicester get their revenge as Liverpool suffer defeat at the King Power stadium

A Mohamed Salah penalty miss was costly for Liverpool as Leicester City got their revenge after losing the Carabao Cup tie on penalties to Jurgen Klopp’s side only a few days ago.

Former Everton man Ademola Lookman scored the vital goal in the second half which secured the three points for former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

It was a pretty dismal display from The Reds with the title now looking increasingly difficult after their second loss of the campaign.

It was the first time Liverpool have not scored for 35 matches which emphasises how slow the attacking play was.

Chelsea are up next at Stamford Bridge which will be a difficult contest.

Player ratings:

Alisson: 5

Didn’t have anything to do other than the goal which he arguably could have done better with at his near post.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 5

Some delightful switches of play and an excellent throw-in to start the move which won the penalty. Again like with Alisson could have done more to stop the goal.

Joel Matip: 7

Done well to consider he was booked in the first five minutes. Goal saving block to deny Jamie Vardy in the first half. Liverpool’s best attacking threat with his mazy runs, which tells you everything.

Virgil Van Dijk: 6

Sloppy in possession at times. Didn’t have trouble coping with Vardy or Kelechi Iheanacho.

Kostas Tsimikas: 5

Got into some fantastic positions but was wasteful with his delivery on too many occasions.

Fabinho: 5

Won the ball well and dealt with James Maddison but was slow on the ball like the whole midfield.

Jordan Henderson: 4

Was playing his own game of volleys in the first half. Three on the whole poor efforts at goal which sailed harmlessly over the bar. Didn’t help the defence out and could not help breakdown the Leicester defence.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 3

Anonymous display which saw him taken off ten minutes into the second half. Nearly inadvertently scored after Henderson couldn’t connect with his cross.

Mohamed Salah: 3

Won the penalty, missed the penalty, hit the crossbar with the rebound, then took the ball of Alexander-Arnold on the second rebound. Brilliant save from Kasper Schmeichel in the first half sometime after the penalty mayhem. Couldn’t get in the game at all in the second half.

Diogo Jota: 4

Snatched at a chance just before half-time. Was sloppy in possession like the whole Liverpool team. Should have gotten an assist after a great ball to slot Sadio Mane through who blazed over.

Sadio Mane: 3

Missed a sitter by needlessly smashing the ball instead of placing it. Ineffective throughout the game as his goal drought goes on.

Substitutions:

Naby Keita (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 55th): 2

Had no impact.

James Milner (Fabinho 64): 2

Same as Keita, didn’t help.

Roberto Firmino (Jordan Henderson 70): 2

Same as Keita and Milner, done next to nothing.
