Liverpool went into the game against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle hoping to win back-to-back games for the first time this season and they achieved that feat but it took until the last seconds to get the three points.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went 1-0 down yet again for the eight time in the last nine games in the Premier League with Alexander Isak scoring on his Newcastle debut on the 38th minute to send the away end into oblivion.
He thought he had a second after the interval after cutting in past Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez with composure before firing past Alisson yet again but he was deemed offside, just, by VAR so Liverpool were still in it.
It did not take long after that decision for The Reds to drag themselves back into the contest through Roberto Firmino.
He passed the ball in on the hour mark running onto Mo Salah’s pass building on his two goals that he scored against Bournemouth last weekend.
After the equaliser Liverpool did not create too many clear cut chances until the 96th minute when Salah was put through on goal but his effort was blocked by a fantastic sliding tackle from Dan Burn.
James Milner swung in the resulting corner and Joe Gomez got something on it before it ended up at the back post.
Salah was fighting for it and he won the header which allowed Fabio Carvalho to whack it in off the bar to win Liverpool the game.
The youngster who turned 20 on Tuesday celebrated by mimicking the Newcastle players who were going down injured throughout the game trying to time waste.
The win moved Liverpool up to fifth place on eight point as they look forward to a Merseyside derby which they will have to contest without captain Jordan Henderson as he went off with a hamstring injury.
