Birkdale Community Hub & Library Celebrates Prestigious King’s Award

Birkdale Community Hub & Library has been honoured with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest recognition for voluntary groups in the UK.

The award celebrates outstanding contribution to the local community, commitment to volunteer-led initiatives, and the high standards the community hub upholds in all aspects of its work.

The Hub and Library, which are located at Birkdale station opened in 2021, have quickly become a valued resource for the people of the local community.

The award was presented last week in a ceremony conducted by Lord-Lieutenant Mark Blundell, the King’s Representative for Merseyside, accompanied by five Deputy Lieutenants. Honoured guests included Mayor of Sefton, June Burns, and Sally Ralston BEM, Head of Community and Engagement at Merseyrail.

Phil Margham, Chair of Trustees for Birkdale Community Hub & Library, praised the volunteers for their dedication and hard work, stating:

“The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is a mark of excellence, and we are incredibly proud to have met its rigorous criteria. This award reflects the tireless efforts of our volunteers in creating opportunities for friendship, providing leisure activities, and fostering learning. To be one of just 280 voluntary groups across the UK recognised this year is a tremendous achievement.”

Merseyrail, which nominated Birkdale Community Hub & Library for the award, has been a key supporter of the charity’s community initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Sally Ralston BEM, Head of Community and Engagement at Merseyrail commented:

“Merseyrail is committed to supporting the communities we serve, and we are delighted to see Birkdale Community Hub & Library receive this well-deserved recognition. They play a vital role in bringing people together, promoting lifelong learning, and enriching the lives of local people. Their volunteers are an inspiration, and we are proud to have been part of their journey to this fantastic achievement”

Birkdale Community Hub & Library remains dedicated to its mission of fostering community connections and lifelong learning, ensuring that its impact continues to grow for years to come.
