Liverpool Celebrates Mathew Street Festival to host music competition

Liverpool Celebrates Mathew Street Festival will host the final of a unique music competition this month, allowing two winners to play the iconic Pier Head stage before The Jacksons during the upcoming music festival bonanza.

The event is to be held at Content in Cains Brewery Village – a ‘Battle of the Artists’ style contest for emerging young talent, with judges including BBC DJ Dave Monks and Kevin McManus, Head of UNESCO City of Music. Musicians Esco Williams and Rheana Forrester are also on the panel.

Liverpool Celebrates Mathew Street Festival to host music competition

The judges have whittled down hundreds of entries to a final 10 ahead of the event on May 22nd, with talent from across the city submitting showreels of their best performances.

The chosen 10 have the chance to perform in front of the four-person judging panel as well as a live audience, with two victors being selected on the night to perform an iconic Saturday evening slot at a packed-out Pier Head at the returning Liverpool Celebrates Mathew Street Festival.The competition starts at 7pm at Content and is free to attend. The final will support Fans Supporting Foodbanks and organisers are kindly asking for food donations on the night to support the charity. 

Taking place across the August Bank Holiday (Friday 23 – Monday 26 August), Liverpool Celebrates commemorates the 10 year anniversary of the last Mathew Street Festival, with The Jacksons, now comprised of brothers Jackie, Tito and Marlon, set to headline the Saturday, joined by a spectacular 10 piece live band.

The Jacksons will perform legendary tracks such as Blame It On The Boogie, I Want You Back, ABC and Can You Feel It after Boyzlife – the Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy supergroup -rock the Pier with acclaimed Boyzone and Westlife number ones.Jonny Bongo, of the popular worldwide Bongo’s Bingo event, will also bring his Festival Experience to the Dock with N-Trance also set to take the stage for a lively set, with the winner of the competition set to warm up the crowd for an unforgettable evening of entertainment. 

The final 10 includes Esme Bridie; Clionagh Mclaughlin; Motel Sundown; Lucy Ellen; Kate Nicholas; Simon Howard; Corin Murphy; Tom Lloyd; Paul O’Keefe and George Weston.

BBC Music presenter and Liverpool Celebrates judge, Dave Monks, said:

“This is an incredible opportunity for some of the most exciting musical talent from Liverpool and beyond. I am thrilled to be part of a brilliant judging panel and to give two artists the chance to play the iconic Pier Head stage and open for The Jacksons.

“This is a great idea from Liverpool Celebrates and I am proud to be involved with donations on the night being given to Fans Supporting Foodbanks. I hope as many people as possible can make a sensational night of live music and help us with our judging!”

Liverpool Celebrates is bringing a four day celebration of Liverpool’s musical heritage, culture and people to the Pier Head, with the use of local suppliers and people, where possible, at the forefront of the operation. 

Taking place across the August Bank Holiday (Friday 23rd – Monday 26th August),  Liverpool Celebrates will commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the last Mathew Street Festival on the Sunday and Monday with dozens of acts to perform across the music extravaganza.

Liverpool Celebrates Festival is set to attract thousands of visitors to the city and will provide a huge boost to the local economy, shining a light on the world-famous musical heritage of Liverpool.
