Egerton Village to see construction begin at Wirral Waters

Construction is about to start on Egerton Village, a £4 million retail, leisure, and events space at Wirral Waters.

Peel Waters, the master planner and developer of Wirral Waters, has announced that Starship Group, a partner, will spearhead the development and construction of the waterfront village. This will provide the expanding community at Wirral Waters with much-needed local amenities and facilities.

Starship moved its headquarters to Hythe, a brand-new Grade A office block in Wirral Waters, in 2022. The modular home builder and low-carbon developer also relocated all of its manufacturing operations to Wirral Waters’ Mea Park neighbourhood.

Using low-carbon Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the retail and leisure village will be built, and during its 16-month construction, students from Wirral Met College will be involved through work experience and apprenticeships.

The central area of Four Bridges will be Egerton Village. Egerton Village, which will be a creative and community hub for tourists, students, businesses, and residents, will be situated next to Wirral Metropolitan College, Hythe, the proposed Maritime Knowledge Hub, and the expanding residential community along Northbank. It boasts views across Liverpool from its waterfront. It will include a managed workspace, small independent retail stores, a dockside restaurant and bistro, artists’ studios, and even a central area for public events.

Wirral Council has granted full planning permission for Egerton Village, which was designed by the renowned OMI Architects after an architectural competition. Its layout took advantage of the Wirral’s topography as a collection of villages, as well as its dockside location and views of Liverpool and the River Mersey.

Funding from the Wirral Waters Investment Fund, which is managed by Wirral Council, will also help Egerton Village. The fund was established to allow business rates to be reinvested in the community to fund new initiatives that will spur economic growth and bring in additional revenue from business rates.

As a component of Peel Waters, a thriving and inventive portfolio of waterfront developments spanning the United Kingdom, Wirral Waters contributes to the creation of jobs, economic growth, large-scale, sustainable regeneration projects, new homes, and public realms nationwide.

Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Wirral Waters, said:

“Egerton Village is a really important development for Wirral Waters. It is another jigsaw piece in the Four Bridges neighbourhood that will bring in much needed amenities to the area, including ancillary retailers, a café, restaurants, and workspace, with a southwest facing quayside and courtyard, where people can come together to enjoy the stunning waterside location and use the community, arts and events spaces, which are all important elements of its design.

“We are very aligned with the Starship Group on our vision for Egerton Village, with its low carbon, modular design, and I am thrilled, once again, to be able to offer construction students at Wirral Met College with yet another fantastic opportunity to learn about modern, low carbon construction right here on their doorstep.”

Simon Humphreys, Director of Starship Regeneration, said:

“Starship are delighted to be bringing this project forward with our partners Peel Waters and Wirral Council. Egerton Village will be an amazing new quayside destination and gateway into Wirral Waters and only by committing to partnership working can we deliver these ambitious and exciting projects.

“Egerton Village will be a focal point at the heart of Wirral Waters providing valuable local amenities for this emerging neighbourhood. There will be host of new cafés, restaurants, arts, and retail space to choose from and we look forward to developing an events programme for the courtyard in this stunning dockside location.

“We are really excited about the future at Wirral Waters, which is why we are committed to investing in this project and working with our partners Peel Waters to accelerate projects like this and help create real change across the Left Bank of the Mersey.”

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paul Stuart, said:

“Egerton Village is another vital step in the continuing push to bring regeneration which will make a real difference to people’s lives. It is gratifying to see this development moving forward, and shows how Wirral’s approach to bringing forward regeneration right across the Left Bank from Bromborough, through Birkenhead and Wirral Waters, Seacombe and Liscard and all the way to New Brighton, is paying dividends.”
