Liverpool included in UK and Ireland UEFA EURO 2028 bid

It has been formally announced that the City of Liverpool and Everton Stadium will be part of the UK and Ireland’s bid to host UEFA EURO 2028.

With the help of their government partners, the innovative five-association partnership of England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales hopes to host the tournament every four years and create a fantastic football celebration.

The bid offers UEFA ten stadiums in famous sporting cities that are home to football clubs with rich histories and traditions, as well as direct, quick, and sustainable transportation links and lodging that will offer an unmatched experience for teams and fans.

A part of the city’s renowned waterfront, Everton’s new home will be situated on the banks of the River Mersey. It will rank among the nation’s most open and environmentally friendly sporting venues.

The joint bid sets out a clear and compelling vision for the tournament: “Football for all. Football for good. Football for the future.”

The key to achieving this is a dedication to diversity, social responsibility, and innovation in order to deliver an outstanding UEFA EURO 2028 that will create unforgettable memories in packed, iconic stadiums in famous footballing cities.

By staging a historic event that will unite people, the goal is to expand a more diverse and inclusive game and connect with new audiences and the next generation of fans.

It will highlight the lively and hospitable culture of Liverpool and invite visitors to take in the city’s well-known attractions and landmarks.

The ambition is to create new opportunities to play football across all ages, genders, and abilities and make football more accessible, family-friendly, and inclusive.

It will also provide longer term benefits through tourism promotion, social enterprise and other business and training opportunities that will provide people with skills for life.

Interim chief executive of Liverpool City Council Theresa Grant said:

“It is fantastic news that the City of Liverpool and the new Everton FC stadium is part of the UK and Ireland’s bid to host UEFA EURO 2028.

“Our city has football in its DNA and we are used to giving a massive welcome to football fans from across Europe and beyond.

“From European Capital of Culture to Eurovision, Liverpool has an unrivalled track record in delivering diverse and inclusive festivals.

“UEFA EURO 2028 in Liverpool would be much more than games taking place on the pitch as we will develop a programme that will involve the whole city and wider Liverpool City Region.”

The ten stadiums and capacities are:

1.         Wembley Stadium, London (90,652)

2.         National Stadium of Wales, Cardiff (73,952)
