Liverpool UFC star and entrepreneur raise £10,000 for Children’s Charities

Liverpool UFC fighter Molly McCann and entrepreneur Tom Smyth, who owns Dream serviced apartments in the city, have raised more than £10,000 for children’s charities by powering up and down the iconic Radio City Tower an exhausting 16 times.

The super-fit pair went stair crazy, completing their 4,000-metre climbing challenge in 3hours 45 minutes.

They decided to take on the tower, which at 125metres is one of the UK’s tallest buildings, to raise much-needed funds for Cash for Kids in Liverpool, the Children’s Cancer Unit in Belfast, and Early Break charity in Manchester.

Mixed martial arts and UFC fighter Molly, aka Meatball Molly, is one of the most formidable competitors in what is a notoriously tough sport. A former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship Flyweight Champion, she currently competes in the flyweight division of the UFC and holds the record as the first English woman to win in the UFC.

But she’s as fiercely passionate outside the ring as she is in it. A keen supporter of Fighting for Autism, 30-year-old Molly hosts a podcast with Former Miss GB Gemma Garrett called Brunch Club by Buella.

She has teamed up with Tom as a client on his Dream Mentoring Programme and as an ambassador for Dream luxury serviced apartments.

The 4,000-metre charity climb – the equivalent of almost half the height of Mount Everest – was their first fund-raising event together and Tom says it was such a success they’re now planning another.

“We both feel privileged to be able to help these three amazing charities,” he said. “Although there’s a global pandemic, the work that they do must go on.

“We’re aware of just how much charities have suffered over the past 12 months, with so many events having to be cancelled and donations well below where they’d normally be.

“The stair challenge was a great opportunity for Molly and I to show our love for children, our respect for the charities that do such incredible work to support them, and how dedicated we are to the most important thing in life – helping others.”

Laura Charlton, charity manager for Radio City Cash for Kids, said they were delighted with the support they had received from Molly and Tom.

“They both fundraised in such an incredible way to help those in our local community who need us most. 100% of the donations will be used to provide essential items, such as nappies, baby milk, food and electricity, to families financially affected by Covid.

“We would like to thank Molly and Tom for taking on such an extreme challenge and thank those who donated to their fundraiser. Together we can make a difference.”
