Sculptors have just a few weeks left to submit their proposal for The Liverpool Plinth, as the judging panel who will select the winning artwork is unveiled.

The panel includes Lucy Byrne, Director of dot-art; Crispin Pailing, Rector of Liverpool; Sam Lackey, Interim Director of Liverpool Biennial; Lesley Woodbridge, Urban Design/Public Art Officer at Liverpool City Council; Pete Spiers, Archdeacon of Knowsley and Sefton; Sue Darwell, Area Operations Manager at Bruntwood and Commercial District BID Board member; and Gail Dooley, whose artwork Tidal Shame is the most current sculpture on the Plinth.

The Open Call for sculptors working in the North of England to submit their work to be considered by the judging panel closes at midnight on Friday 19 March.

The Liverpool Plinth is an annual competition and public art project, run by Liverpool BID Company, Liverpool Parish Church and dot-art. It is part of the BID’s Public Art Strategy, enriching public spaces within Liverpool’s Commercial District.

The current statue installed on The Liverpool Plinth is Gail Dooley’s Tidal Shame. The sculpture, created by the Yorkshire based artist, depicts a ceramic gannet, a seabird common in Liverpool, entangled by authentic sea plastic and detritus collected on beach shores across the UK and Merseyside.

The new sculpture will be chosen by the same process as the previous three, via Open Call. It is available to any artist working primarily in sculpture based in the north of England to submit existing work. The application process opened on Monday 18th January. The selected artist will also receive a £1,000 prize.

Lucy Byrne, Director of dot-art, says:

At dot-art we are passionate about championing artists and bringing art to people in accessible ways. We’re delighted to have such a committed team making up this year’s judging panel and we’re looking forward to seeing more submissions coming our way We are looking for artworks that inspire, that challenge, that inform or that cast light onto a little-known topic.”
