Bubble Tea Trend heads to Bold Street

  • August 13, 2020
  • Editor

There’s bubbles heading to Bold Street this August, when Premium bubble tea brand Gong cha heads to Liverpool!

The well-known bubble tea brand from Taiwan will open its doors on Bold Street in August offering over 40 drinks featuring a range of textures and layers alongside pearls, fruit jellies and milk foam to create enticing tastes and flavours.

Popular variations include the ever-popular ‘Dirtea’, a dessert-like drink combining their signature milk foam, fresh milk, brown sugar pearls and topped off with Oreo crumbs.  Other favourites include ‘Strawberry Milk Green Tea’, ‘Mango Matcha’ and ‘Lemon Juice with Ai-Yu Jelly & White Pearl’.

To celebrate the launch, Gong cha is giving away a free drink to the first 100 customers through the door on opening day and all customers will be able to enjoy an exclusive offer of a free drink with every purchase on selected drinks throughout the opening weekend.

Gong cha translates as ‘tribute tea for the emperor’ and is the most recognised bubble tea brand globally with 1,500 outlets across 20 different territories as far reaching as Taiwan, Korea, New Zealand and the USA. Justin Liew, head of Gong cha England, said: “The bubble tea trend has gripped Asia, Oceania and the US, where it is considered a Taiwanese speciality. We are confident the people of Liverpool will love it once they’ve tried it. Bold Street is a meeting place for people who like to try new things and pick up on trends and we are locating our store at its heart to offer the refreshing bubble tea range to those who are curious to sample a completely fresh taste sensation.”

The Liverpool store will be open Monday to Sunday from 12PM to 8PM at 13 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4DJ from late August.

More About Bubble Tea

How is bubble tea made?

Bubble tea is created by shaking a tea base with the various elements (e.g. milk or fruit purees) in a shaker, very much like how you would shake a cocktail. The signature “bubbles” – usually the Pearls, are then added, though there are many other toppings available as well.

What was the first bubble tea?

Originating in Taiwan in the 1980s, the oldest known bubble tea consisted of a mixture of hot Taiwanese black tea, small tapioca pearls, condensed milk, and syrup or honey. Many variations followed; the most common are served cold rather than hot.

Where does the name come from?

The origin of the name bubble tea is disputed – some say it is refers to the milk froth when the drink is shaken, others have suggested that the pearl toppings make it ‘bubble tea’.

How do you drink bubble tea?

Gong cha uses a machine to seal the top of the cup with a paper seal. This allows the tea to be shaken in the serving cup and makes it spill-free until ready to drink. The paper seal is then pierced with a large straw.

What is the packaging?

Gong cha uses paper seals and paper wrapping for its straws as part of its effort to reduce the amount of plastic being used. Bio-degradable, non-plastic straws are also being sourced and will be phased out in line with government regulations.
