Liverpool primary school teacher challenges pupils across the city to live workout

Peter Kelly, a primary teacher at Lister Junior School in Tuebrook is set to lead a live workout challenge for pupils across the city this February, while also raising money for St Andrews Foodbank.

The Liverpool primary teacher is challenging as many children as possible to take part in the live event which will take place on Friday 5th February via Zoom, with the 30-minute-high intensity workout suitable for pupils from reception up to Year 6 and requires no equipment.

While getting active at home, participants are being asked to make a small donation to St. Andrew’s Community Network, home of the North Liverpool Foodbank. All funds raised will help St. Andrew’s support individuals and families across North Liverpool who are subject to food poverty.

Mr Kelly, who visited 20 local schools while running 26 miles for Sport Relief in March 2018, hopes the workout challenge will be “something positive that pupils right across the city can get involved with during lockdown”.

He says: “This event is about bringing people together for a common cause but also about getting children active and feeling positive. Similar events may give people something to look forward to and engage with.

“I was unsure how well this idea would take off and if people would engage with it but teachers across the city have amazing enthusiasm and determination when it comes to providing positive opportunities for our young children and once again, I am sure they will do their best to get involved and make this an event that the children remember.

“It is crucial now more than ever that we provide positive experiences for this generation and make sure that they are aware of the importance of health and wellbeing as we hopefully move out of lockdown.

“Exercise plays a huge role in maintaining good mental health, but it is also fundamental in bringing people together from all different backgrounds and communities, allowing them to share their experiences and help one another through what has been a very difficult and challenging situation for so many people across our city.

“I would like to thank LSSP (Liverpool School Sports Partnership), and in particular Jimmy McGinn and Jay Watkinson for providing a platform for schools to sign up to this event. Without their hard work and kind efforts, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Personal trainer and CrossFit specialist Harriet McGuffie has offered the use of her gym on Woolton Road for the challenge and will be taking part in the routine alongside Mr Kelly.
