Made Of Stars is coming to Liverpool this Autumn

  • September 26, 2022
  • Editor

Made Of Stars is a ground-breaking immersive journey opening in Liverpool this autumn.

Centred around a stunning 30-foot pyramid, the piece is an exploration of humanity in the modern world and has been created by a community of global artists who have sought refuge in Liverpool.

A 10 day run of the experience takes place from Tuesday 11th – Thursday 20th October at the Black-E. Suitable for audiences of all ages, Made of Stars will wrap audiences in an empowering sensorial experience that draws on the awe inspiring stories of 14 refugee artists led by Iranian film maker Elia Sadeqi, Jamie Perez Sandoval who is a radio presenter from El Salvador and Mudaser Akbari, a young Afghan boxer.

The installation then visits 3 other locations across Merseyside in late October and into November at Knowsley and St Helens with Heart of Glass and Liverpool Lighthouse in Anfield. Free tickets for all locations are available from Friday 30th September 1pm at www.turntabletheatre.co.uk

Each collaborator’s story, be it inspiring, aspirational or challenging, is woven together, from the depths of outer space to a mysterious radio tower in Southern America, and from familiar Liverpool landmarks to the breath-taking creations of Afghani seamstresses.

Liverpool-based artist and architect Noel Urbain and Grace Goulding, a multi-disciplinary movement director and choreographer, have worked alongside the collaborators on the piece, as has Nick Knight – arguably the world’s most influential and visionary photographer. A collection of portraits taken by Nick of the core artistic team will feature within the overall installation and are part of the wider ambition of the project to redefine what it means to be a refugee in Britain today.

The project is funded by The Arts Council, Culture Liverpool and The Unity Theatre. Made Of Stars is led by Turntable Theatre working with independent creative companies including Sola Arts, Show Studio and Focal Studios.

Chris Tomlinson from Turntable Theatre explains:

“Made of Stars has enabled us to work with artists of different colours, faiths, customs, traditions and ways of life from around the world. Through devised collaboration with refugee artists and displaced people residing in Liverpool we hope that together we’ve created stories of hope, joy, accomplishments and a sense of belonging. Because after all, we are shadows and dust. Molecule and atom. Skin and bone. Flesh and blood. Made of Stars tells this mind-blowing story. We are very grateful that Made of Stars is free to visit for everyone from the funding support we have very kindly been given for this project to come to life.”

Made Of Stars will first be experienced at:

The Black-E, 1 Great George St, Liverpool, L1 5EW – Tuesday 11th – Thursday 20th Oct

Ticket info for all Made Of Stars locations can be found here: www.turntabletheatre.co.uk Tickets are free and are available from 1pm Friday 30th September.
