Liverpool’s Cavern Quarter lights up highlighting its iconic music history

  • January 25, 2023

Liverpool’s Cavern Quarter is being lit up with a series of street projections highlighting some of its iconic music history.

From a Yellow Submarine to Cavern Records, the projections will reflect moments of music inspiration.

Original Beatles member, Pete Best, switched the projections on on the 61st anniversary of Brian Epstein signing his contract to manage the Beatles.

Funded by Liverpool BID Company, the install of the four projectors are part of a series of investments to showcase the musical history and heritage of the Cavern Quarter. Part of the Retail & Leisure BID area in the city centre, the Cavern Quarter stretches from Whitechapel to Victoria Street.

One of the oldest commercial districts in Liverpool city centre it is also the site of much of Liverpool’s musical heritage, from the Cavern to Eric’s.

Once home to an iron foundry, brewery and mills, it became home to the fruit and produce exchanges selling goods as they came from the nearby docks. By the 60s the Cavern Quarter was the place of music and entertainment in the city.

In June 2022, a new mural, co-commissioned by Liverpool BID Company and Culture Liverpool on behalf of the Beatles Legacy Group, was unveiled showing the ‘Pool of Life’ and music inspiration that ties the cavern Quarter together.

In autumn that year a statue of Brian Epstein was unveiled on Whitechapel, depicting him walking from the famous record shop NEMS, where he worked, to the Cavern, one lunchtime, where he saw The Beatles for the first time.

Later in the year the five Cavern Quarter Archways, which decorate and signpost the entrances to the Cavern Quarter, underwent a complete restoration and upgrade with coloured LED lights.
