A Crosby women takes on tremendous triathlon in honour of dad

A Crosby woman is getting ready to swim, ride, and run more than 70 miles in the oppressive Spanish heat next month to honour her dad, who is currently receiving treatment for cancer.

Amy Barnes will take on the Ironman Mallorca challenge in May, which will see her cycle more than 56 miles, run 13 miles and swim for over a mile before she’s allowed to cross the finish line.

Amy had originally hoped to raise £1,000 for the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, but she has so far raised £2,500 from friends, family and Sefton Council coworkers.

With the triathlon just weeks away and her sunscreen packed, Amy’s thoughts turn to her brave dad Tony, who is currently fighting cancer and being looked after by teams at Clatterbridge.

“We’re both Evertonians so we know never to give up. My dad is a fantastic man and the Clatterbridge team have been incredible in ensuring he remains fighting fit and used to the same quality of life he had prior to diagnosis.

“The care and work from the staff in this hospital has helped keep my Dad fit and well while living with his cancer. They have supported him and our family throughout so I couldn’t miss this opportunity to help support the hospital and give something back.”

Amy, the Active Workforce Manager for Sefton Council, said her family had been overwhelmed with support.

“We’re blown away by how many people have donated and offered their support and wellwishes ahead of the Ironman Mallorca. My friends and colleagues have been a fantastic tower of support and I can’t wait to do everyone proud by crossing that finish line – albeit a little tired!”

Amy will face baking 25 degree heat as she powers through an ocean water swim. Once that hurdle is overcome she will then face 56 miles of cycling through rough and rugged hilly terrain before a 13 mile run to the finish line.

“It wont be easy, but it pales in comparison to the battle my dad and many others like him have to go through in the fight against cancer. This one is for him and the Clatterbridge team!”

You can support Amy by donation here.
