This summer, Liverpool’s Mathew Street Festival is making a big comeback in a fresh format at the Pier Head.

The Liverpool Celebrates Mathew Street Festival will be held from Friday 23 to Monday 26 August, during the August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival will mark the 10th anniversary of the last Mathew Street Festival, and it will feature numerous acts that will be announced during the four-day music extravaganza.

The Mathew Street Festival was cancelled in 2013, leading to calls for it to be brought back. In response, a partnership was formed between the festival’s original organizers – Bill Heckle, Dave Jones, Alex McKechnie, and Rick Allen – and Liverpool Celebrates, a group of local leaders who have organized some of the country’s most popular events. Together, they are working to bring the festival back.

The format of the event has been revamped and relocated to the Pier Head below the iconic Liver Building in the city centre. The event will be managed and ticketed and is exclusively for adults aged 18 and over. The event will run over the bank holiday weekend from a central location at the Pier Head.

Every day will feature a distinctive theme that commemorates all types and periods of music, including Liverpool icons and hometown performers, global superstars, and impressive tributes.

A specially curated Cavern Club Takeover will be the finale of the event, featuring artists who have performed at the original Mathew Street Festival over the decades. The complete line-up for the four-day celebration will soon be disclosed, with the announcement of major acts anticipated.

The Mathew Street Festival is being celebrated in Liverpool, drawing in numerous visitors and providing a significant uplift to the city’s economy.

Bill Heckle, Director of the Cavern Club and original Mathew Street Festival, said:

“I am very proud of what the Mathew Street Festival achieved and how much it contributed to the local economy.

“The new format will feature a centrepiece stage in front of the iconic three graces but will still be encouraged to be a citywide celebration.”

Liam Spence, marketing and communications director at Liverpool Celebrates, said:

“We are extremely excited to bring back one of the city’s most loved events this summer.

“The festival in its original format could never take place again spread across the city centre which is why we have chosen the iconic Pier Head to host a secure, managed, ticketed event. The new format promises to deliver a celebration of Liverpool’s culture and musical heritage with four fantastic themed days.”

Ticket prices will start at £25 plus booking fee. To find out more visit the website or register your interest here.
