Liverpool Women’s Hospital Charity has received over £45,000 that was raised from a Strictly Come Dancing-style event that was held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at The Adelphi Hotel. Hazel Langdon’s Dancing Unlimited hosted an event with the goal of raising money for two new grieving rooms at the Liverpool hospital.

There was a three-course dinner, show dances, a cabaret by Victoria Jones, and of course, the competition itself. The black tie event was judged by Carol Parry, Carl Parris, and Jason Parkinson. Twelve courageous contestants, each with a professional dance partner, performed a dance routine in front of hundreds of people after months of preparation.

Hospital employees, former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, detective Clive Myerscough, Max20’s Jake Archer, fundraiser Chris Clark, chef Dave Dobie and owner of La Vida Liverpool magazine Justin Hopper were among the competitors. The judges and audience were mesmerised by the amateur dancers, with Danielle Smith from Liverpool Women’s Hospital and professional Alex Wyatt emerging victorious.

All the couples gave amazing performances, but Danielle and Alex’s captivating rendition of the Jive won them both the Judges Award and the Audience Award. The competition was followed by a sizable auction with prizes including a Fred Olsen cruise, bringing the total amount raised for the event to over £45,000!

The money raised is funding two bereavement rooms at the hospital, providing women who have tragically lost their babies at birth with a dedicated room for their privacy and additional support. They can grief in private without having to be around other women who have just given birth, a terrifying experience that one can’t even begin to imagine, thanks to their access to these rooms.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital Charity’s Kate Davis said:

“Not many people are aware that the hospital is also a charity. We are recognised as one of the leading women’s hospitals, with many specialist areas, and it’s thanks to the charity arm that we are able to go above and beyond in many areas. Events such as Strictly For Liverpool Women’s Hospital are vital and I’d like to thank everyone for the amazing amount raised!”

Dance Unlimited’s Hazel Langdon added:

“It was a thoroughly successful event for a wonderful cause and I am so proud of everyone involved. It’s very daunting performing in front of hundreds of people at a prestigious event but all performers were so impressive! After months of hard work, it’s brilliant to see it all come together and raise so much money.”
