The nightmare is finally over- Everton stay up on the last day of the Premier League season

Big Dunc vs Stevie G: The Scouser wins the battle between the old foes

Take a deep breath and make sure the heart rate goes back to normal as the stress is no more as Everton will be in the Premier League next season.

It all went down to the last few minutes of the campaign as Everton were waiting for the final whilst to go before the relief within the stadium poured out and they all have Abdoulaye Doucoure to thank.

It was his strike hit with full force which won Everton the game, a game which they had to win due to the fact Leicester City were winning against West Ham and at half-time Everton were down.

Down but not out something which Sean Dyche has massively changed since his arrival and something that all the players have alluded to since he got the job, a change of mentality, something which Frank Lampard clearly could not instil into any of the players.

Everton have relied on several last-minute goals under Dyche with late equalisers from Michael Keane and Yerry Mina against Spurs and Wolves respectively being vital in keeping them in the division at the expense of Leicester City and Leeds United.

Leeds were ripped to shreds by Spurs on the last day with the game finishing 4-1 with Sam Allarydce’s reputation as a safe choice to keep your side up diminishing season by season whereas Dyche’s will have risen even if it did take until the last game of the campaign.

There was a pitch invasion after the final whistle but there was also several chants of sack the board and jeers against the ones who did invade as this should not be celebrated by Everton, definitely not after the fact it also happened a year ago.

A club the size of Everton can’t keep surviving by the skin of their teeth as it always ends in one way eventually so even though the nightmare has stopped for now it cannot become a reoccurring one.

This summer is enormous for the club, several board members need to be moved on and several players need to be let go as well as brought in at a smart price if they want to make their way back up the table.

A stress-free campaign lingering in mid-table will be massive progress will be an achievement, which tells you everything you need to know about how bad it has been for Everton.

As for Dyche, thrown in the deep end in January and lost a important player in the window before he was given no striker.

Some decisions have been questionable, but he has given the side a different feel of rigidness against opposition and if more attacking players can be brought in then the football will only get better.

He kept the club up when all seemed lost after Lampard’s dismal spell so now the decision has to be made whether he is the manager the board want for the future.

That decision will be the one that defines whether this nightmare will carry on in a few months’ time or not.

But for now, Evertonians can sleep easy once again, they are Premier League but they need and want to be so much more than that.
