Everton get a vital three points against Leeds thanks to an electric Goodison Park

Player ratings: Everton kick off the new year with a loss to Brighton

Goals from Seamus Coleman, Michael Keane and Anthony Gordon gave Frank Lampard his first league win as Everton manager.

An exceptional atmosphere at Goodison Park helped spur on the players in a must-win game as the three points takes the Blues one point behind the West Yorkshire side.

From the opening seconds Everton set the tempo of the game as they pressed Leeds United and won the ball back to put Anthony Gordon through on goal but Luke Ayling made a desperate tackle to stop him from shooting.

Leeds had been warned but on the tenth minute mark Everton took the lead through captain Seamus Coleman.

There was some lovely build-up play around the box as Gordon played the ball through to Donny Van De Beek who flashed it across the box trying to find Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It was intercepted though, and Seamus Coleman came steaming in to head the loose ball over the line.

Goodison Park was roaring, bouncing, electric.

The most intimidating it has been in a long time.

Lampard’s players fed off that and were all over Marcelo Bielsa’s side but eight minutes after the opener the away side nearly got an equaliser out of nowhere.

Rodrigo chested the ball outside the box and his speculative effort slammed the crossbar to give the home support a scare.

Five minutes after that though they were no longer scared as the lead was doubled.

Gordon swung in a corner and Michael Keane simply headed the ball home.

Leeds couldn’t cope whilst Everton looked like they were having fun whilst playing their game for the first time in a long, long time.

The chances kept coming for Everton in the first half with Alex Iwobi placing a shot just wide and Richarlison having a fierce shot brilliantly blocked by Lee Hjelde.

Calvert-Lewin in the closing stages of the half was slipped in by Iwobi and his shot had to be pushed wide by Meslier as The Toffees were looking to finish off the game in the first half.

The Whites came ever so close just before half-time as they attempted to get back into the game  and it was Rodrigo yet again attempting the spectacular.

He had the ball on the edge and his curling shot again crashed against the woodwork with Jordan Pickford well and truly beaten.

In the second half Everton turned on their game management which their fans will be delighted to see as they made sure the away side could not break them down.

It took until 12 minutes from the end for Everton to finally finish the game as Gordon accidentally scored.

Richarlison ball rolled past one defender and unleashed a strike which took a deflection of the scouser to find its way in the back of the net.

Substitute Salomon Rondon came ever so close to making it embarrassing for Leeds United as he connected with a superb Dele Alli cross on the volley but unfortunately for him Ivan Meslier saved magnificently.

A fantastic day all round for Frank Lampard’s Everton after the shambles at Newcastle a few days ago.

Next up is Southampton away from home which will be a tough task but the confidence will be sky high after today.
