Writing on the Wall take over Tate Liverpool for Black History Month

Tate Liverpool have partnered up with Writing on the Wall for Black History Month.

Acclaimed recording artist Blue Saint and WoW’s young writers will take over Tate Liverpool for Black History Month. Blue Saint and his team of young writers will respond to the work of the outstanding Black artists in Tate’s collection, offering new interpretations and reflections.

The residency in the gallery will see Blue Saint working with WoW’s Young Writers, aged 11-15 and with young people from the public aged 16-24. Through a series of creative workshops this October, Blue Saint and the young people will create spoken word pieces, a poem, prose or rap, in response to the collection displays – Democracies and Whose Tradition? – at Tate Liverpool.

Working directly with Blue Saint in workshops and one-to-one sessions, the Young Writers will craft their spoken word piece with a chance to perform live at a late event in the gallery on Saturday 6 November as part of the On Record music festival.

Daniel Sebuyange, known professionally as Blue Saint, is a Congolese and British rapper, singer-songwriter, spoken word poet, actor, producer and designer. An original member of Writing on the Wall’s Liverpool Young Writers from the age of 12 to 16, Blue Saint has gone on to receive many accolades and achievements for his music, community work and activism.

Writing on the Wall is Liverpool’s longest-running writing and literary festival. They celebrate and inspire creativity and writing in all its forms through inquiry, debate, performance and publishing and we’re pleased to be working in partnership with them on this project alongside Culture Liverpool.
