Faces Behind the Business - Jamie Cook - Dorathy & J

When did you first get into the industry?

I got into the industry of selling products on Instagram around 4 years ago. I had another product back then and have been through a rebrand since to sell solely jewellery and the occasional accessory. Since the rebrand I set up a website and this is where I seen real growth! Enjoying the process.

How long have you worked at Dorathy & J and what is your job role?

I have worked for D&J from the beginning of time so October 2016. My role is EVERYTHING. From admin to accountant to graphic designer to content creator to photographer the list is literally endless! I do love doing it all and also quite love everything being down to me, so I know exactly where I’m up to. Who knows what the future holds maybe next year I’ll have to hire someone to help me out as times this year have been a little tough on my own.

What is Dorathy & J ethos?

Our ethos is honest, relatable and accessible. We think the most important part to customer service is transparency. If something goes wrong be honest about it and fix it to the highest standard you can! Being relatable is the main aim of our Instagram we want to be a lifestyle page as well as advertising a product. We want people to enjoy being on our page and get comfort from our honest opinions in business and life! Being accessible is very important to be as I want all types of people to be able to enjoy Dorathy and J whether it’s a man wearing our chain bracelet sets or someone of low income treating themselves to a pair of our sterling silver earrings that last them years! It’s important to keep prices low to cater for all.

What’s the best bit of advice you could give to anyone looking at working in your line of work?

My best advice would be don’t give up. You have to be so resilient to work on Instagram. Just as it can be a tough place to be mentally for personal use it can be for business use! The constant comparing to your peers is still a huge part of the daily struggle and this coupled with the algorithm is enough to make anyone want to give up but you can’t! You haven’t come this far to only come this far. There are more good days than bad and hard work and perseverance always pays off in the end.

What do you love most about Liverpool?

I love the people most about liverpool. I love how fashion forward they are. How they always take care of themselves and look glam. Kids are always dressed immaculately with not a hair out of place. We are always the first onto new trends. Not just this but also very entrepreneurial. There are so many amazing businesses to come out of liverpool.

If you could describe your business in 3 words what would they be?

3 words to describe my business would be fun, humble and inclusive.
