SERIES ONE – EDITION ONE

In the first edition in our Scousers Abroad series we spoke to Cathy Mckeown, aged 64, who is now living in El Chaparral, Spain, after moving there from Liverpool.

Scousers Abroad - Cathy Mckeown - El Chaparral, Spain

What area of Liverpool are you previously from?

I was born in Brunswick road and then lived in West Derby. Before we came to Spain in 1997, we lived in Tuebrook.

What made you choose to move overseas and what made you choose your current location?

We loved foreign holidays and always said we’d retire abroad but it happened sooner than we thought when my fella got finished up from his job

We looked at places in Bodrum, Turkey first but it was a bit scary, it was 1997 and it was very difficult and in the end, we didn’t trust anyone!

Spain was an obvious place; it was nearby and had warm winters. We liked Benidorm but didn’t want to live there so we looked nearby Torrevieja was very affordable and we bought a 2-bed house near a forrest and a lake for 5 million pesetas (22k)

How long ago did you leave Liverpool?

We moved out in October 1997

What do you miss most about the city?

I miss the family the most. A son and daughter 3 granddaughters and 2 great granddaughters. All of them are still living in Liverpool

Other than them I miss the wit of the people, the pubs and the friendliness, everyone talks to everyone in Liverpool.

If you could describe Liverpool in 3 words to the people of where you live now what would they be?

corazones muy grande! Very big hearts ♥️

Would you ever move back to Liverpool?

Never say never but I don’t think I’d move back home to Liverpool, maybe visit more often?

If you could bring a piece of Liverpool with you to your current location what would it be?

I’d like to bring Home and Bargain, Boots and B&M back to Spain with me! I love to visit them when I come home!

You can check out Cathy on Twitter @liverbird17 or even say HELLO!
