60 Years of the Jacaranda Liverpool – A Weekend of Celebration

Event date: Friday August 24, 2018 to Sunday August 26, 2018

This August bank holiday is set to be one massive weekend of celebrations when The Jacaranda Liverpool turns the big 60!  The legendary Slater Street club, which opened its doors in the late 1950s as a coffee bar by local businessman and promoter Allan Williams, has seen the venue live though many incarnations over the years.

Back in the day, The Jacaranda provided local teens with an environment to hear modern, American-influenced music, with The Beatles as frequent customers. Originally known as “The Silver Beatles” the young passionate lads asked Williams for a chance to perform at the venue, Williams agreed on the terms they redecorated the place in exchange of them using the basement as a rehearsal studio…. And the rest is history!

The event will coincide with International Beatleweek, and with the Jacaranda the birth of the fab four also celebrating its 60th birthday, means Liverpool is set to be bursting with nonstop partying and celebrations for all to enjoy.

The celebrations kick-off on Friday 24th August with a drinks reception in The Jacaranda, with the weekend paying tribute to the history of the venue and present a glimpse of future stars. Both the original venue, and its ground-breaking new Seel Street offshoot, Phase One, will collaborate to celebrate this impressive milestone with a programme of incredible live music and events.

The programme of events celebrates both the venues’ heritage whilst also highlighting how Phase One aims to embrace Williams’ original vision for the future of music. Following the launch, upstairs at the Jacaranda will be a Q&A with legendary DJ, author and speaker Dave Haslam who wrote about The Jacaranda in his book ‘Life After Dark.’ Haslam will be signing copies of this book alongside his latest release ‘Sonic Youth Slept On My Floor.’ There will also be live music in the basement with a Beatles-inspired line up to keep everyone dancing through the night.

An exhibition of all things Jacaranda will remain open to the public all weekend, curated by Liverpool-based writer and photographer Marlie Centawer. Expect to see artefacts and ephemera, a vast array of memorabilia including photos donated from original attendees, and images of the various Jac interiors and layouts over the years.  Over in Seel Street, Phase One presents an evening of live music from the best up and coming local bands, including False Advertising and Gen & The Degenerates.

The festivities continue in The Jac on Saturday night with The Japanese Beatles and their unique take on John, Paul, George & Ringo; a night you need to experience at least once in your life! For new music lovers, Phase One hosts ‘Revolution 9’; a celebration of the city’s hottest new talent. Liverpool acts, including Nick Ellis and Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones, will each play a short set of original music and also pay homage to the city’s musical legacy with a Beatles cover. The party will continue late into the night with the next instalment of the venue’s ICON club night, with The Beatles taking the spotlight, naturally.

Of course, The Jacaranda isn’t just known for its association with The Beatles; the original incarnation of the coffee shop which hosted beat poets, artists and even steel bands, will see the Sunday night remembering the old days with a day of storytellers, poets, beat poetry and more.

What makes the weekend even better? Its FREE ENTRY! So ensure you head to one of the events and step back in time for some swinging celebrations!
